An anime that ended just a few months ago, Insomniacs After School (Kimi wa Houkago Insomnia) is a story of two students being unable to fall asleep and finding comfort in each other’s company in an abandoned observatory. A slow-paced romance, it doesn’t feature any unnecessary drama. It’s simply a teenage romance, and a very believable one at that.
4. The Garden of Sinners
The Garden of Sinners (Kara no Kyoukai) is an adaptation of the first novel series by Kinoko Nasu, who is mostly known for being the original creator of the Fate franchise. It’s an extremely gritty and dark series of movies, with a lot of intense moments that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Taking place in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area in the late 90s, it follows a series of odd and mysterious events, happening mostly during the evening and night. Don’t let the anachronic order scare you, because it all makes sense in the end, and the atmosphere is top notch.
3. Initial D
Want something different? Perhaps a story about a man who is very good at delivering tofu while driving around the corners? Follow Takumi Fujiwara as he enters the world of night racing. A gripping story spanning six seasons, not counting extra OVAs, remake movies and other content, Initial D will keep you entertained for a while. Eurobeat music that plays in every episode adds a lot of immersion to the series as well.
2. Call of the Night
A middle schooler is suffering from insomnia and meets a vampire girl. Sounds simple enough? Yeah, perhaps it is, but it’s all about the execution, and Call of the Night (Yofukashi no Uta) works perfectly. A romance story of two beings who struggle to understand the concept of love, this anime is perfect if you want something different from your usual modern romcoms. Fun fact: the manga (which is about to end) was inspired by the song “Yofukashi no Uta” by Creepy Nuts, which was in turn used as the ending song in the anime, along with their two other songs being an opening and an insert song.
Some of you probably expected this one. Durarara!!, set in the same universe as some of the author’s other works, including Baccano!, is perhaps the perfect example of a “night vibe” anime. With multiple plot lines, dozens of characters with different points of view, employing the storytelling format of “the middle - how we got there - the end” in a lot of episodes, Durarara!! is a puzzle that only pieces itself later down the run. It doesn’t detract from the show, however, as it is surprisingly easy to follow even when you don’t have all the information. Since most of the scenes taking place in night-time Ikebukuro, one may even argue that the city itself is one of the main characters. With 4 seasons total, it’s a very rewarding journey. Seriously, give this one a try.
For when you can’t fall asleep, but don’t want to anyways.
