Anime comedy usually has a more or less defined style. That said, some anime break the norm completely and become very unusual and weird — in a good way. These 5 series feature humor so insane that there’s nothing really similar to them, but that’s why we like them.
The opening for Asobi Asobase is incredibly misleading — it baits the viewer into thinking it will just be your average cute slice-of-life. The anime is nothing like it. It’s a slapstick comedy anime with a lot of very crude jokes that take the viewer by surprise.
The anime was actually a hit with people who wanted something completely different from the usual style of comedy. It was actually praised for how unhinged its humor was. Oh, and the ending is a metal song. Just because they wanted it to be.
Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo
The most normal part of Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo is its name. Essentially, it is just a typical battle shounen… except it’s about a man who uses his nose hair to fight an oppressive government which wants everybody to become bald.
Other characters include a man with an ice cream head, a walking jelly, a flying spiked ball and other similarly confusing entities. The humor is incomprehensible, often full of references and generally absurd. Despite all of that, the anime used to have a sizable fanbase back in the day.
Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei
Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei is a series that follows the life of a teacher who is constantly trying to die — even the smallest problem can send him down the pits of despair. He is put in charge of a class of misfits, and the anime proceeds to cover social issues in its signature dark humor style.
The anime is made by studio Shaft — meaning its visuals are also abstract — and is also full of Japanese puns and obscure references. That said, you can enjoy it without understanding those, but they certainly add to its charm.
Despite the name, Kyoto Animation’s Nichijou is not ordinary at all — at least, by our standards. We have a robot, a talking cat and a variety of other characters that seem completely out of place.
Yet, the bizarre things that happen in the series are considered normal by the characters, only adding further to the absurdity.
Eagle Talon
Eagle Talon (Himitsukessha Taka no Tsume) follows the daily life of an evil society based in Tokyo. Only their evil plans always fail, the hero that fights them is rude and quite dumb, and the series is mostly dialog-based, with a ton of social satire and jokes that can’t be translated into other languages.
It’s entirely animated by one person in Flash, and he also voices most characters. Only the first spin-off and the spin-off Golden Spell were ever translated into English — but the franchise has many more seasons in Japan, as well as countless movies, OVAs and commercials. The characters also appear randomly in The Dungeon of Black Company (Meikyuu Black Company).
Want something different? Try some of these.
