5 Fall 2023 Anime We Will Remember (for Different Reasons)

From slice-of-life and comedy to fantasy and action.

Fall 2023 was a great time to be an anime fan. We will reminisce and talk about great anime — some of which is still ongoing — based on how much reaction it got from fans and how much we enjoyed it.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Sousou no Frieren)

 - image 1

Frieren is an immensely popular show both in Japan and outside of it. It is about what happens to a nearly immortal elf after her party defeats the Demon King. The titular elf Frieren takes her time before she understands that she cares for her party members. The anime shows her grow and become attached to her new party members as she ventures out to find Heaven and talk to those she has lost on the way. The anime is a very nice blend of genres and emotion, from slice-of-life to action, and all of it is done extremely well, which is why it would be difficult to forget Frieren.

The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto)

 - image 2

Another popular anime, The Apothecary Diaries is about a young apothecary, Maomao, who was kidnapped and sold into the inner palace in a pseudo-Chinese setting. She tries to stay out of trouble, but her kindness gets the best of her. Once she helps one of the Emperor’s concubines save her child, Maomao is drawn into the inner palace intrigues. This anime has mystery and comedy, and some would even argue it is a romcom given that everyone seems to want Maomao to be in a romantic relationship with another character, Jinshi. Maomao is a wonderful, quirky character, who we will remember for a while.

The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You (Kimi no Koto ga Daidaidaidaidaisuki na 100-nin no Kanojo)

 - image 3

Another fan favorite, The 100 Girlfriends is obviously a romcom. Rentarou Aijou is accidentally given 100 soulmates by God. It was Friday, you see, and He was watching something too interesting on TV while deciding Rentarou’s fate. That is basically what this anime is like. It is a great comedy, and it has a lot of best girls for Rentarou to meet and become crazy in love with. It is a quirky, funny romp, and we are glad that we got to watch it this fall.

Tearmoon Empire (Tearmoon Teikoku Monogatari: Dantoudai kara Hajimaru, Hime no Tensei Gyakuten Story)

 - image 4

The Tearmoon Empire is a great comedy with an all-seeing narrator and a rather self-absorbed princess Mia. She is given the opportunity to use a future diary and escape the guillotine in a new timeline and become a little less self-absorbed on the way. There is some mystery, especially with the time-travel, but mostly it is a comedy, in which Mia constantly fails her way up. The opening theme for the anime is perfect, too! We will never forget how cute Mia is or how great the timing for the narrator’s comments is.

The Ancient Magus' Bride Season 2 Part 2 (Mahoutsukai no Yome Season 2 Part 2)

 - image 5

Many people do not watch The Ancient Magus' Bride anymore, but the new season is really worth a watch. While Chise is not the same after everything from Season 1 happened, she is still true to her habit of doing her best to help others when she can. Season 2 and especially Part 2 are very emotional, and Season 2 introduces a lot of great characters to root for. That is why we are glad that we got to watch The Ancient Magus' Bride this Fall.
