5 Great Anime Without Any Supernatural Elements and Where to Watch Them in 2024

Tired of constant magic and superpowers in anime? Watch these!

Sometimes, we want to take a break from magic and supernatural elements and watch something more grounded.

Of course, fantasy and sci-fi anime won’t work, as they are still pretty unbelievable. Even outside of those, many series include these elements. Well, here are 5 that don’t have any — they are as realistic as they can possibly be.

Vinland Saga

Vinland Saga starts as a story of Thorfinn, who embarks on a quest to avenge his father. The story doesn’t end there, however — he still sees the killer dead, but not in the way he wanted.

The anime is more than just a revenge story: it’s an epic tale of his life, set in the distant past. Vinland Saga uses a historical setting and doesn’t add any magic to it, focusing more on realistic human drama and important topics such as the point of violence.

Both seasons of the anime are on Crunchyroll, and the manga is still ongoing, so we might get even more in the future.

Haikyuu!!

It’s hard to add any magic or supernatural elements to a sports anime. That said, Haikyuu!! keeps being extremely realistic — something that’s been confirmed by many professional volleyball players.

The reason for that is the mangaka, Haruichi Furudate, actually being a member of a volleyball club in his past. No wonder everything is so well-detailed! Outside of a recently released movie, The Dumpster Battle, the entire series is on Crunchyroll.

Great Pretender

If you’re a fan of heist movies, Great Pretender is basically one — turned into an anime series that you can find on Netflix. It’s very flashy and over the top, but doesn’t add any supernatural elements — keeping the viewers’ suspension of disbelief intact.

The sequel, Razbliuto, has also just come out on Netflix — although most fans agree it’s slightly weaker.

Hyouka

Kyoto Animation is famous for two things: amazing animation and slice-of-life anime set in high school. Hyouka is one of their most famous series, following the members of the Classics Club as they constantly end up solving mysteries.

These mysteries are never of supernatural origin — they are often very mundane, but that’s what is fun about it. After the Funimation merge, you can find the series on Crunchyroll.

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu

A lot of more experienced otaku praise Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu as one of the greatest period dramas of all time. Spanning multiple decades, it tells a story of a group of people tangled in a web of complex relationships as they struggle to figure them out, while also engaging in a dying art of rakugo (classical Japanese act).

The anime is absolutely amazing, and both seasons are on Crunchyroll. However, the director’s cut of the first episode, which is almost an hour and a half long, isn’t — just something to keep in mind.
