We would love to see more of these underappreciated characters.
The hit sports anime and manga Haikyuu!! is known for its engaging, well-written characters, all with their own stories to tell. Unfortunately, due to its large cast, the series didn't have enough room to dive deep into all of these stories. If Haikyuu!! had a longer running time, we would love for these characters to have gotten their deserved spotlight.
5. Keishin Ukai
Ukai junior is simply not talked about enough. After he reluctantly agrees to take the Karasuno High boys under his wing for a few games, there’s no reason for him to continue on with the team. Yet throughout the series, we see him grow attached to his young underlings and learn how to juggle his other responsibilities to help the Karasuno team achieve their dream of reaching the nationals.
4. Yui Michimiya
The female characters in the show are mostly delegated to the role of cheerleaders or managers. There’s one exception: the Karasuno girls’ volleyball team. Yui Michimiya was the team captain; after her team lost in the Interhigh Preliminaries, she blamed herself for the loss and eventually retired. She is mostly remembered for her scenes with Daichi, but we would love to see more of her journey, as well as the Karasuno’s female team's shenanigans in general.
3. Kanji Koganegawa
Koganegawa is a freshly minted setter at Date Tech High. Due to his good-natured, enthusiastic personality, fans think he would’ve been a great fit for the Karasuno team. He also has one of the best designs in the anime. We wish we’d seen more scenes of him growing and practicing along with Hinata at the training camp.
2. Satori Tendou
Known as a “monster” to his rivals and a huge softie to the fans of the series, Satori is another character who quickly won over the audience. He is Shiratorizawa Academy’s middle blocker, and his biggest claim to fame is his “guess blocking” ability that allows him to read his opponents and predict their moves. Fans love his chemistry with the ever-awkward, cold Ushijima.
1. Chikara Ennoshita
Ennoshita is a backup wing spiker of the Kurasuno High team. Despite his quiet and reserved personality, he is the only character who can contain Tanaka and Noya. He is an underrated player who at one point managed to fill in for both Asahi and Noya thanks to his outstanding analytical and observation skills. It’s a shame that even though he’s on the main team, we don’t really know that much about him compared to the rest of his teammates.
These secondary characters managed to make an impact on both the story and the hearts of the fans. We can only hope that we’ll get to see more of them in the two brand-new full-length Haikyuu!! movies slated to come out soon, one in late 2023 and another sometime in 2024.
Until then, you can get your fill by reading Haikyuu-bu!! – a comedy spin-off series written by the original manga’s author Kyouhei Miyajima, where we get to steal an extra glance at the Date Tech and Aoba Johsai High teams and other fan favorites.
