5 Similar Anime to Watch While Waiting for Chainsaw Man Season 2 Announcement

Seriously, MAPPA, just give us our sequel already.

We’ve been waiting for the Chainsaw Man Season 2 announcement for a while now. It seems that for now, MAPPA is focused on other projects, which doesn’t mean it won’t happen in the future, however. In the meantime, fans can watch some series that are similar to CSM — yes, it is a very unique anime, but it doesn’t mean there aren’t any similarities between it and other series.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Okay, so you probably knew this was going to be here. Despite that, many people still haven’t seen Jujutsu Kaisen — and there’s no reason not to try, especially if you like Chainsaw Man. JJK is another modern battle shounen that is much more gruesome and gory than you would expect — without it getting extremely edgy for no reason. Both are entertaining stories about humans fighting demons or cursed spirits, and both are animated by the same studio — it’s obvious why many fans think they are similar.

Devilman: Crybaby

One of the inspirations for Chainsaw Man was the Devilman franchise — with the main character being, in part, the same kind of entity as he usually fights, it’s understandable why. However, another thing that appears a lot in both series (okay, maybe in CSM’s case, mostly in the manga) is the amount of Christian symbolism. With Devilman’s most recent installment, Crybaby, being a standalone series, you can watch that if you want something similar to CSM. It’s also quite violent and has a lot of philosophical ideas behind it — but picking it apart is absolutely not required to enjoy the show.

Dorohedoro

Another MAPPA series, Dorohedoro, also takes place in a setting you’d never want to live in — a district called Hole, where human life costs nothing. Both Dorohedoro and CSM combine extreme violence and gore with absurd humor, and both are extremely entertaining at that. With how fun the cast is, Dorohedoro is also similar to Chainsaw Man. Be aware, however, that it's yet another MAPPA series that needs a sequel.

FLCL

FLCL, in some way, inspired Chainsaw Man, although not in the way that many people would think. Yes, they are completely different in genres and presentation — yet they both deal with the same themes. Both are coming-of-age stories, featuring confused teenagers in a bizarre world, and both have crazy action and a cast of characters that are not particularly sane. The original FLCL, which is only 6 episodes, is a lot of fun, and definitely a good watch after you’ve seen CSM — although it is quite short.

Tokyo Ghoul

Yet another “a teen becomes an enemy of humanity and struggles with it” series, Tokyo Ghoul was all the talk of the 2010s. Tokyo Ghoul deals with the similar struggles and violence as CSM does — you might want to check it out if you weren’t there during the peak of its popularity. Perhaps it’s better to stick to S1 only and switch to the manga after, however: Root A isn’t canon, and the adaptation of :re is very rushed and confusing unless you read the source material.
