Love city action vibes? You might like these then.
The urban fantasy genre doesn’t actually have much to do with what people normally expect from fantasy. It features city settings with a lot of action, superpowers or supernatural elements, and often focuses heavily on mystery.
If you think you like that and have a Crunchyroll subscription, you can try these!
Durarara!! used to be the staple recommendation for urban fantasy. It is a bit less popular now — the main story concluded years ago, and the anime fully adapted it, so there wasn’t any new content — but that doesn’t make it worse.
The anime is famous for its enormously large cast of characters and unique way of telling the story — where events can be told out of order and from multiple perspectives. Things always come together, and the anime is an excellent depiction of bustling city life where the town of Ikebukuro itself might as well be one of the main characters.
K
The anime — and yes, it’s called just “K”, but some call it K-Project— follows multiple clans led by Kings. Powerful individuals who have been bestowed supernatural abilities, they clash against each other for power — but there is more going on.
Not everything is as obvious as it looks at first, and the mystery thickens the more you watch. The stakes are also constantly raised, and the anime never lets the viewer get bored.
The 2019 adaptation of Boogiepop and Others (Boogiepop wa Warawanai) can easily be confusing at first. With many characters and a mystery plot that isn’t fully explained even by the end of the first arc, it flew under the radar for many viewers.
The anime is told from different viewpoints and occasionally out of order. The plot threads come together later to reveal the full picture, which is incredibly complex and unique. The spin-off, Boogiepop Phantom, was actually released in 2000, following the first arc of the series, which already existed in light novel form.
What would happen if New York City were trapped in its own dimension after a gate to another dimension opened there? That is exactly the premise of Blood Blockade Battlefront (Kekkai Sensen).
The city, renamed to Hellsalem's Lot, is home to both humans and supernatural beings of all kinds. The protagonist, Leonardo Watch, considers himself an observer — until one day, he receives a mysterious power and is forced to search for others.
Kyousougiga
Kyousougiga is the kind of anime that needs to be experienced at least once. It is a supernatural story with a lot of mythological elements, a heartwarming tale of a family, a crazy fantasy action series set in a fantasy city created by one of the characters, and an art project with incredible animation.
It is easy to get lost in the first episode, but just keep watching: pay attention, and you will be greatly rewarded.
