A theme previously tabooed by the author makes an unexpected comeback.
Just recently One Piece has done something entirely unexpected and, in the process of doing that, parted ways with one of its biggest secrets — the identity of Luffy’s mother.
We have known for a while that his father — Monkey D. Dragon, the most hunted man in the world with an enormous bounty over his head — is the leader of the Revolutionary army, seeking to put an end to the tyranny of the corrupt World Government. The anime does explore his complicated relationship with his son (albeit very briefly), but Luffy’s mother is a completely different story.
The first thing that has to be mentioned here, and that would at least partially explain the significance of the current moment, is that the author of One Piece, Eiichiro Oda, has officially gone on record saying that Luffy’s mother will never be introduced in the story, as her identity, as well as her relationship with Luffy, is not something that he would like to explore.
And yet in chapter 1057 we caught a glimpse of what likely was her first appearance — an enigmatic scene of a woman holding a toddler and signing a lullaby. There wasn’t any official confirmation that this woman was exactly who fans think she was, but we have some very strong evidence to support this theory. We are talking, of course, about the fact that the woman’s appearance took place in the flashback memory of Shanks, who, as we all know, did visit Foosha village where Luffy grew up. On top of that we also know that this village has been in heavy use by the Red-Hair Pirates as their safe heaven — so it would be more than plausible for Shanks to run into a baby Luffy there.
Now, considering previous statements of the series creator Eiichiro Oda, there are only two possible explanations. Either that was a one-time appearance, intended to finally silence the fans asking for more information about Luffy’s mother. Or, and this is a much more sinister possibility, the author might be slowly running out of ‘fresh’ ideas to use, forcing him to revert to suboptimal arcs and plotlines that he himself did not want to go for originally.
In any case, as it often is the case with One Piece, there is only one way to find out for sure — and that is to wait for the new chapters!
