A Sign of Affection Handles This One Anime Trope Exceptionally Well

This series is good at a lot of things.

Summary:

  • Misunderstanding is one of the most annoying media tropes.
  • A Sign of Affection has it too.
  • It handles it differently, though.

Although A Sign of Affection (Yubisaki to Renren) feels fresh in a lot of ways (like having an adult cast for a romance anime, for example) it still relies on a number of tropes. And even here the series manages to stand out and show us something that we seldom see somewhere else.

Misunderstanding trope

This trope is very often used for comedic effect. We’re sure you can think of at least a couple of series where characters misunderstood each other and it led to some hilarious consequences. A Sign of Affection does it, too, but it’s nowhere as annoying as in other anime.

The thing that’s so irritating about this trope is that all such misunderstandings can be solved with just a single question. But characters tend to behave in a dumb way for episodes until everything finally becomes clear.

Itsuomi is very good at resolving misunderstandings

Itsuomi is the true hero when it comes to this trope in A Sign of Affection. He is very clever and perceptive; he understands that there has been some confusion and he’s quick to resolve it and talk about it.

In one of the previous episodes, Yuki noticed Emma returning the key to Itsuomi and she started questioning the relationship between these two. When Itsuomi found out about Yuki’s thoughts, he was quick to tell her she had nothing to worry about.

And just like that, the misunderstanding is solved, and Yuki is no longer anxious about it. The series didn’t turn this small detail into a presumable love triangle or a conflict.

Another one of these happened last week, in Episode 7, when Yuki misread Itsuomi’s sign for “kiss” and thought he was asking for a hug. She didn’t expect the man to kiss her and was astonished. It’s a good thing she didn’t mind that, though.

And again, Itsuomi didn’t just ignore it and understood what was happening. In Episode 8, he addressed this situation and explained that it was just a misunderstanding. They discussed the situation and moved on.

That’s why it’s so refreshing to watch a series like A Sign of Affection. There’s no childish confusion-based humor, the characters can talk about their feelings and actions using their words, and not conflicts and manipulation. You don’t just know that it’s not a high-school romance, you can see and feel it, and this is amazing.
