Is Itsuomi not that cute?
Slight manga spoilers ahead!
Summary:
- A Sign of Affection explores the romance between Yuki and Itsuomi.
- Itsuomi’s behavior is considered creepy by some fans.
- It might be an exaggeration, though.
A Sign of Affection (Yubisaki to Renren) started airing on January 6, and the first episode was an absolute beauty. The series has all the chances of becoming the best romance anime of the season, and fans are already completely in love with its style and main character.
However, there’s one thing that fans are cautious about, and this is the love interest of the main protagonist, Itsuomi. But what is wrong with him?
A Sign of Affection follows Yuki, a hearing-impaired girl who meets a handsome stranger on a train. The chemistry is instant, and soon enough they start communicating and exchange contacts with each other.
The first episode was stunning and the romantic vibe makes you want to go “aww” all the time. But there are just a few things that fans found questionable about Itsuomi’s behavior.
Itsuomi is often inappropriate
He seems to absolutely ignore Yuki’s personal space, and the girl herself notices that, although she doesn’t really mind. She’s attracted to Itsuomi, so it’s natural that she’d like to be closer to him and doesn’t mind him touching her.
On top of that, we can’t forget about her hearing impairment, which makes it difficult for the boy to attract her attention with sound, that’s why he uses touch instead.
However, manga readers say that it goes beyond the first episode of the series, and the situation gets worse in the future. Itsuomi keeps calling Yuki cute and something to look at, always emphasizing her physical beauty as the most important thing about her.
Besides, he kisses Yuki even though he perfectly knows that she was just going for a hug. The girl doesn’t mind that of course, since, as we’ve mentioned, the attraction is mutual, but everyone has to move at their own pace when it comes to romantic relationships. And it feels like Itsuomi denies Yuki that.
There was another questionable moment of Itsuomi covering Yuki’s eyes during his conversation with a friend. She can’t hear but she can read lips, so that was to prevent her from understanding what was being said.
Still, there’s a big number of readers who don’t see him as creepy. They call all of the mentioned issues a matter of communication.
There’s nothing wrong in calling a girl you like cute and touching her if you can’t attract her attention otherwise. So let’s just keep watching the series and see for ourselves if it’s really that bad as some manga readers think
