An Interview with One of The Voice Actors Reveals Interesting Details About Sengoku Youko's Production

It is honestly a miracle we are getting a proper adaptation for it.

Summary:

  • Two of Sengoku Youko’s cast members gave an interview recently, in which they shared their perspectives on the production of the anime.
  • Souma Saitou, who voices Jinki, revealed that originally, the anime was planned for only 2 cours, but the representative director of White Fox pushed for a 3-cour adaptation.
  • Despite earlier concerns, the action animation looks good, and fans are looking forward to more episodes.

The premiere of Sengoku Youko was very solid. Fans of Satoshi Mizukami, the mangaka, were initially somewhat on the fence regarding this adaptation. Their concerns were understandable after the disaster that the anime of Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer (Hoshi no Samidare) was.

Despite that, the first episode of his other work, Sengoku Youko, impressed many. It seems like White Fox is approaching the adaptation with care, and a recent interview sheds light on why that’s the case.

Souma Saitou and Yuuki Takada, the seiyuu behind Jinki and Tama respectively, gave an interview recently discussing the production of the anime. The interview mostly concerned the voice acting aspect of the series, but some other details were mentioned, some of which we haven’t known before.

Souma Saitou (Yamaguchi in Haikyuu!!, Tatsumi in Akame ga Kill!) revealed that he is a big fan of Satoshi Mizukami’s works and was happy to be given a major role in one of the adaptations. He said that he especially liked the battle shounen feel of the manga, which brought out his inner teenager.

Yuuki Takada (Elma in Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, Yuu in Bloom into You) said the manga of Sengoku Youko was very fun and easy to read. She’s a big fan of her own character, Tama.

Takada said that she initially had concerns about how 100 chapters would be adapted into 3 cours, but she was convinced when she looked at the script. This essentially confirms the anime will be a full adaptation.

The anime initially wasn’t planned to cover the entire manga

Moreover, Saitou revealed that originally, the anime was planned to adapt the manga in only 2 cours, skipping the first part entirely. However, Gaku Iwasa, the representative director of White Fox, is a huge fan of Mizukami’s works as well. He reached the production committee and managed to convince them to adapt the entire manga from the beginning.

Fans of Sengoku Youko are lucky their anime is getting this kind of treatment. Nowadays, anime that air for more than 2 cours consecutively are a rarity. This, naturally, raises some concerns about whether White Fox can pull off such a production schedule.

White Fox’s adaptation of Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- (Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu) Season 2 was praised for its extended episodes and staying faithful to the source. Despite that, the visual quality of the anime somewhat suffered compared to the first season.

The internal restructuring of White Fox that happened between Re:Zero Season 2 and Sengoku Youko seemed to help. While the overall animation quality of the latter is still just fine, the action scenes look great — which is what matters the most. Fans seem generally happy with the premiere and are looking forward to more episodes.
