Anime Powerscaling Controversy: Twitter Users Think Fans Got It Wrong

Who are the most powerful anime characters?

Summary:

  • A list of the most powerful anime characters has got fans laughing.
  • Gojo and Levi took the first two places, Twitter users disagree.
  • There’s no actual point in comparing the power of fictional characters.

A list of Top 10 most powerful anime characters according to Japanese fans has been recently revealed, and the list has attracted a lot of attention in the western social media. Twitter users found some choices in the list questionable and called the entire thing hilarious.

Gojo and Levi are the strongest

No. 1 on the list is Gojo (Jujutsu Kaisen) himself, and we think there aren’t many people who would question this particular candidate a lot. He’s not only the most powerful sorcerer in the entire JJK series, but can truly be seen as superior to many other characters in various anime. Nevertheless, even Gojo is seen as a weird choice for the most powerful anime character ever.

The second place on the list went to Levi from Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin), and this is where the most of the controversy began. Don’t get us wrong, Levi IS an extremely skilled warrior and there’s hardly anyone in the AOT series that can last long while battling him. Eren might be the only one capable of defeating Levi, and it took him years of training and coming into the possession of three titans to even have a chance. But saying that he’s stronger than anyone else except for Gojo? Doesn’t feel right.

Other characters from the list have also received side eyes from righteous commentators. Seeing Makoto Kyougoku (Detective Conan) on the list made fans go “waaat?”. And even those admitting that he is pretty strong, cannot fathom why he’s even mentioned. Reinhard (Re:Zero) also has no reason to be on the list, as fans say. With all due respect, no. Strongest in Re:Zero? Yes. Strongest out of everyone else? Nah.

Powerscalling polls are meaningless

This all led to the fact that the list was based on being a fan favorite character instead of actually the most powerful one, which is a thing that a lot of people like doing, but we guess this time a bit too many people disagree.

Powerscaling is quite a tricky thing, and some fans straight up say that they hate such polls. The only one who can determine the true power of characters is the storyteller, and the hierarchy of power in fiction is nothing more than just an illusion. A lot of shounen anime lead to a seemingly weaker protagonist defeating the villain no matter how strong the latter is.
