Can such a thing as “happily ever after” even exist in the series?

Elizabeth and Ciel used to feel like an endgame.
A lot has happened since.
There’s a chance of them making up, but romance is hardly possible.
Elizabeth might be the most underrated Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji) character. When she was first introduced into the story, her personality and her crush on Ciel evoked a lot of annoyance among fans.
However, bit by bit, chapter by chapter, and episode by episode, you start seeing the appeal of Lizzie and even empathize with the girl a bit.
Moreover, it becomes obvious that Ciel cares for her, too. It might not be the feeling we think of when hearing the phrase “true love” but it’s obvious that Elizabeth means something to him; and you start thinking they might even be the endgame.
Their relationship has suffered a lot
A lot of things have happened since then, and we’ve learned there are actually two Ciels, and our Ciel is not the original one. Not the one Lizzie was betrothed to.
This reveal changed a lot and made the situation much more difficult. Elizabeth is miserable and confused and blames herself for not telling the two Ciels apart.
It doesn’t matter who the older brother and the original Ciel is, we all know that fans’ devotion will forever remain with “our Ciel,” and he is the one they want to see by Lizzie’s side. But everything that’s happened between the two cannot be ignored. That’s why fans are unsure whether there’s still a chance for our Ciel to end up with Elizabeth.
They might make up
The common hope within the fandom is that our Ciel and Lizzie will find a way to patch things up and come back to a good relationship. Fans don’t think that anything romantic is still possible between these two, but they enjoyed their dynamic greatly and hope to bring at least some of it back.
They’re not sure if Elizabeth will be able to fully forgive Ciel for lying and hiding the truth for this much time, so their engagement is hardly possible. On top of that, a lot of fans are sure that Sebastian will devour Ciel’s soul, so there will be no one to get engaged to.
Still, we know how fast things can change, and there were indeed warm moments between our Ciel and Elizabeth. The manga took a lot of time developing their relationship, and it would be weird to throw everything out of the window just like that.

There are also depressing predictions. What if Elizabeth does indeed forgive Ciel and tries to build a new and honest relationship with him?
