Black Butler: Public School Arc (Kuroshitsuji: Kishuku Gakkou-hen) is scheduled for April 13, 2024, and it’s getting closer with each week. It’s been a while since we last saw Black Butler animated, so it’s natural to be excited about the upcoming adaptation.
Black Butler used to be a big deal
If you’re new to the anime community, you probably don’t even know why it’s such a big deal because it’s been years since Black Butler stopped dominating the industry. However, back in the day it was really huge, and you can still see slivers of that greatness.
It’s one of the “you just had to be there” moments. Everyone was talking about the unmatched atmosphere of the series and everyone seemed to be shipping Sebastian with Ciel.
However, times have changed, a lot of people have forgotten about the anime, and it’s very risky to say that you might enjoy a couple of Sebaciel fics once in a while now.
The Black Butler manga, though, has always been very popular in and outside of Japan, it’s still ongoing and has its devoted fans. And they wonder if the new anime season can bring back some of the Black Butler hype.
Will it be just as great?
Unfortunately, we can hardly say that the release of the Public School Arc adaptation will bring Black Butler back to the top. Yes, there are thousands of fans who are very excited about the new season. And yes, we think it will be successful. But perhaps not as successful as before.
The first season of the anime was released in 2008, and back then it felt fresh and unexplored. Also, no matter how shallow it may sound, shippers are a huge part of the fandom, and Black Butler did everything it could to make them want to watch and interact with the series.
But right now we have a lot of series with the same vibe, and a good number of BL adaptations, so Black Butler will not surprise anyone with these themes anymore.
However, it’s hard to deny that Black Butler is a great series with thousands of fans all over the world. And all of them are more than excited about the upcoming season. So there will definitely be some hype. The only question is whether it will be the same as before.
