Let’s discuss some parallels between these siblings.
Entertainment District Arc spoilers ahead!
Creating parallels between protagonists and antagonists is not new, but it doesn’t make it less alluring. Demon Slayer: Entertainment District introduces Gyutaro and Daki, a brother and sister who are members of the Twelve Kizuki. It doesn’t become quite obvious from the beginning of their story, but there are actually some similarities between these two siblings and our main characters, Tanjiro and Nezuko.
Let’s start with a short recap. The turning points in the lives of all four siblings are very similar: both brothers see their sisters on the verge of death. One day Tanjiro comes home and sees that all members of his family have been slaughtered. Nezuko is the only one who is showing any signs of life. Gyutaro finds Daki almost burned to death and it pains him immeasurably.
The pairs of siblings have only each other in the world and the only difference is that for Tanjiro and Nezuko it’s a recent development and Gyutaro and Daki have been like that for their entire life. Although Tanjiro has been able to make some friends along the way and form new relationships, Nezuko will always be his priority and the most important person in his life, just like Daki is for Gyutaro.
Both sisters became demons without them choosing it. It was the only way they could survive, and both brothers have to deal with that, but in different ways: Gyutaro becomes a demon, too, while Tajiro gets obsessed with the idea of saving his sister and bringing her human side back.
Tanjiro and Gyutaro love their sisters over everything and they always try to protect them. Even though Gyutaro and Daki always fight and sometimes say they hate each other, in the end they both choose to go to hell together rather than one of them going to heaven alone. If that doesn’t convince you of the depth of their love, we don’t know what will.
Some fans have also pointed out an interesting detail. Daki hides Gyutaro inside her body just like Tanjiro hides Nezuko inside a box on his back. The theme of protection permeates both relationships and becomes the main idea of these sibling bonds.
The lives they’ve had and the choices they’ve made have influenced Gyutaro and Daki’s and Tanjiro and Nezuko’s fates in a different manner. Although they’re on opposite sides of the story now, with one of the pair being the villains, the core of their relationships is the same: they are based on mutual love and sense of protection.
