Attack on Titan Finale Ruined the Rewatchability of the Series, and Here’s Why

How the ending alters the perception of the entire series.

Attack on Titan spoilers ahead!

Summary:

  • Some series are actually more interesting when rewatching.
  • Eren being just “an idiot” ruins the perception of his entire character development.
  • Eren’s mom finale plot twist changes the impact of her death.

It’s always entertaining to go back to the beginning of an anime after you’ve finished it. If it’s a good series, that is. Such mystery focused shows as Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) are especially interesting during a second watch, since you start to notice things you never understood before.

Ymir’s story gets even better on rewatching

When Ymir’s story was first introduced in Season 2, there were so many hints at the future big reveals, and it gave the fans most of the answers to their questions about the Attack on Titan world in such a way that they didn’t even realize it. After the basement reveal in Season 3, everything became clear, which makes it so engaging to go back to earlier seasons and look for all the clues you missed the first time you were watching the anime.

However, the Attack on Titan finale does a lot to ruin the beauty of rewatching the series, and the main issue is… Eren!

How can you sympathize with just “an idiot”?

We’ve had so much character development for Eren. He went from a clueless boy, who had nothing but his desire to fight back, into a ruthless murderer, capable of destroying the entire world. The boy had no powers, no skills and no experience, but we see him as a highly determined character who keeps fighting no matter what horrors he experiences.

During the Stohess district and Shiganshina battles, Eren fights through pain and injuries just to ensure the victory of humanity. He cuts off his own leg and takes out his eye just for a careful pretense. He manipulates his father into killing an entire royal family. He plays and deceives Zeke in order to start the Rumbling. All of that takes great strength and strategic skills from Eren. And the ending states that he was just an idiot, and he doesn’t even know why he’s done all of these things. How can you watch all of the previous events in the series after such an explanation for Eren’s motivation?

Besides, the first impactful moment of the entire Attack on Titan series was Eren watching his mom get eaten in front of his eyes. It didn’t just traumatize the character and wound him deeply, it also brought a lot of tears to the audience’s eyes. And now we know that this drama was fake because Eren was the one responsible for Carla’s death. Impossible to ignore while rewatching.
