Sorry, Erwin stans.

  • Erwin served his purpose as a character and needed to rest.
  • Armin was a very important unit for the Survey Corps.

Remember how in Season 3 of Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) there was a choice between Armin and Erwin? Okay, that’s obviously a rhetorical question, of course you remember. But there’s one opinion we’d like to discuss.

Was Erwin a better choice?

There are a lot of fans who think that Erwin should have survived back then, and we kind of see their point. Erwin is a very important unit in the Survey Corps, he’s a brilliant strategist, he’s had tons of experience, and let’s face it, he’s just a very likable character for many.

There are dozens of theories exploring the possibilities of another choice, and fans keep having debates over how Erwin’s survival would have influenced the finale of Attack on Titan. And many believe that his impact would have been great.

Moreover, choosing Armin just showed that the main trio had plot armor and made fans feel completely safe about their survival. At least until the final moments of the series.

Levi was right

However, we think that Levi made the right choice when he decided to save Armin instead of Erwin. And there’s more than one reason why.

First of all, it’s better for Erwin this way. Levi was right: the man had suffered enough and he deserved his peace. He fought his entire life, he achieved great things and he served his purpose as a character. It was time to let him go and continue the fight without him.

It was a little bit cruel to kill him off mere moments before the big reveal and not give him a chance to fulfill his dream of learning the truth about the world, but Attack on Titan was never kind to its characters.

But fans still think that Erwin wanted to thank Levi for his choice. Erwin had to be responsible for so many things due to him being the Commander, and this was finally the moment when someone else made the choice for him, allowing him to rest.

On top of that, all the things Eren told Levi about Armin were true. Armin really was very crucial for the story. His skills and wits helped the Survey Corps on more than one occasion. Armin’s intelligence is outstanding and can even be compared to Erwin’s.

His young age allows Armin to think outside of the box, and this ability could overpower even Erwin’s experience. At that moment Armin just seemed more useful for the Survey Corps and humanity’s survival.
