Attack on Titan’s Grisha Asking Zeke to Stop Eren, Explained

Why would he do that?

Summary:

  • In one of the episodes, Grisha asks Zeke to stop Eren when he starts the Rumbling.
  • Grisha himself turned Eren into a Titan Shifter, so why did he do it if he knew the future?
  • Grisha might have thought that it was the only way, but needed Eren to be stopped.
  • He might have wanted revenge, too.

Episode 79 of Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin). After Eren and Zeke spend time watching the past memories of their dad, Grisha, they experience his mental breakdown after killing an entire family. Grisha was not supposed to see them, as it was just a memory, but he looks right at Zeke.

Moreover, he hugs him and apologizes for being a terrible father. But before the episode is over Grisha tells Zeke that Eren would succeed in his horrible plan to start the Rumbling and asks the man to stop Eren.

Why would Grisha turn Eren if he knew what would happen?

While watching the moment for the first time, you don’t really see anything wrong with it. But if we go back in time to the previous seasons, we may remember that Grisha was the one who voluntarily turned Eren into one of the Shifters. So why would he do that if he was capable of seeing past and future memories, too? And if he knew what Eren would do with this power in the future?

Some might suggest that it’s just a weird plot hole, because every time a series adds any sort of time traveling or the ability to predict the future, there are almost always plot holes. So maybe this is just one of those times?

There was a reason

Fans think it’s not that simple. We don’t know how much Grisha really knew at that moment, and if future Eren already controlled him and was capable of influencing his decisions, there was a high chance that Eren hid parts of the memories from Grisha. So his father might not have had all the necessary puzzle pieces to understand the scale of what would happen.

Another suggestion is that Grisha was also convinced that the Rumbling was the only way to protect Paradis along with his family and everyone and everything that was dear to him. He just needed to make sure that the Rumbling wouldn’t be complete, and that’s why he asked Zeke for help. This way Eren would protect the island, and Zeke would be the force, controlling the level of destruction.

Revenge could also have something to do with Grisha’s decision to turn Eren into a Titan Shifter. Back when he had just massacred the royal family, he didn’t know that his wife was dead. He then came back to find Eren and learned the upsetting news. What if his anger was so great that he wanted to get revenge on the Marleyans and allow Eren to go through with his horrendous plan?
