Made in Abyss

Made in Abyss starts like a pretty regular adventure anime. The city where Riko lives has a huge void, called Abyss, in its center. Inspired by her mother, the young girl wishes to explore the said abyss. However, due to her lack of experience she's not allowed to go deep. After encountering a dangerous monster and barely getting out alive, Riko gets rescued by a mysterious robot. Now they must explore the abyss together and find out the origins of the boy. The first episode doesn't promise anything but a nice adventure, but the story gets extremely dark along the way.

The Promised Neverland

A nice quiet orphanage where, despite not having parents, kids are extremely happy. They have a lot of food, they're taken care of, they treat each other like family. Children's studying and cheerful games don't let the orphans get bored even for a second. Their life seems great and carefree. However, a couple of kids are meant to learn the dark truth about their orphanage and decide how to live with this knowledge.

Although this series cannot be called "Made in Abyss" kind of dark, it's also just as good at subverting expectations. Starting like a happy school comedy, the series becomes very depressing quite suddenly. The anime tells us the story of Yuu Otosaka, a high school student whose ability is to possess another person's body for five seconds.

With no intention of being a superhero, he uses this power to cheat on exams and make his life easier. However, he is caught by Nao Tomori, who is the student council president and another person possessing a supernatural ability.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica (Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica)

The story revolves around a group of middle school girls who encounter a mysterious cat-like creature Kyubey. This creature promises them to grant their wishes in exchange for them becoming magical girls. However, this deal may lead to a not so cheerful outcome. Fans say that the story becomes unexpectedly dark real quick, and the anime even uses a decoy ending to deceit the viewers into thinking the series is not what it actually is.
