Black Butler Is Back: Public School Arc Starts Airing, Old Fans Are Ecstatic

The series is back after a years-long hiatus.

Summary:

  • Black Butler: Public School Arc started airing on April 13.
  • The new art style looks stunning.
  • Episode 1 makes the new season look promising.

Black Butler: Public School Arc (Kuroshitsuji: Kishuku Gakkou-hen) Episode 1 aired on April 13, 2024, and this is truly a special date because another anime phenomenon is back.

Black Butler is one of the “You just had to be there” series due to how big and popular it was back in the day.

It’s been ten years since Book of Circus aka Season 3 was released, and seven years since we last saw the series’ characters animated in the Book of the Atlantic movie, so you may understand how exciting such a comeback really is.

New Studio, New Style

One of the things fans were really worried about was the studio change. A-1 Pictures had animated everything Black Butler related previously, and viewers have gotten used to their character designs and style, so they were unsure about CloverWorks at first.

But as it turned out, there was nothing to worry about.

CloverWorks were trying to hide Sebastian as much as possible, there were barely any scenes of him in all of the released trailers, and fans started to worry about his character design. But now that Episode 1 is out, we can say that Sebastian looks absolutely stunning.

The new art style suits Black Butler well, the series does look different, but still recognizable and more than satisfying. We should’ve never doubted CloverWorks.

Do you like the new style?

The new opening and ending themes are also worth mentioning. The OP is dark and eerie just like a Black Butler theme should be. There’s the right amount of foreshadowing and menacing visuals. And the ED is just stunningly beautiful, it feels like you’re watching a movie.

Minor Changes Done

It’s too early to talk about the story-wise quality of the adaptation, but for now everything is as faithful to the manga as it should be. CloverWorks has altered the order of some scenes, but no major changes have been made so far.

There was one change that fans think was for the best, though. The underclassmen at Weston College were called “fags” in the manga, but the anime changed their name to “drudges.”

Although readers were hyped to see some sort of controversy over the name, they agree that leaving the f-slur out of the adaptation was a good idea.

The best thing about the new episode of Black Butler is that it brings a wonderful sense of nostalgia to so many fans. This is a series that’s been around for ages, and Ciel and Sebastian are very dear to thousands of people.

CloverWorks definitely knows it and understands how to play with fans’ emotions. The episode ends with Sebastian’s iconic “Yes, my Lord,” and this is everything we could have asked for.
