Black Butler Might Have Been A Lighter Series

Demon contracts and murder don’t sound goofy at all, but what if…

Since a sequel to Black Butler has been recently announced, it’s time to bring back the hype surrounding this series and speculate a little bit. Black Butler is a dark fantasy anime, and it’s always explored some serious themes and issues such as death, loyalty, trauma and abuse, politics, etc. Despite all that, when you look at the genre list of this anime, you may find “dark comedy” and fans have a theory that this show was intended to be a sillier one, but then got more sinister along the way.

All of that, of course, is just a thought but we can’t deny that it might be not so baseless. While being frightening and grim most of the time, Black Butler is still packed with hilarious moments. Just search for “Black Butler funny moments” on YouTube and you’ll find countless video edits and compilations to prove us right.

Ciel’s servants have become a running gag of the show, they’re often shown with comedy-like faces and their inability to do their jobs properly has always been not just a way of showing Sebastian’s superiority when it comes to serving Ciel, but also a comedic relief. It also might be for the sake of making them look more badass when it’s time to get serious: just remember the Book of Circus arc.

This is not the only running gag of the show. Sebastian’s admiration for cats has made thousands of fans go “aww” on different occasions. A cold-blooded deadly ruthless demon turns into a blushing fangirl every time there’s a kitten on his way? Adorable! And what about his closet full of cats? How cool is that?

Another character worth mentioning when it comes to humor in Black Butler is Grell. While looking frightening at first, this reaper is later shown as one more comedic relief, and Grell’s constant flirting with Sebastian has become the foundation for a lot of fanfiction.

All of that drives some fans to the conclusion that Black Butler might have been a lighter series but got more ominous along the way. A demon butler who’s got a thing for cats and has a flip phone sounds pretty comical. Fans don’t think the show was supposed to be a comedy, though, since it’s impossible to exclude drama with a summary like that as Sebastian’s presence in Ciel’s life has very dark reasons.

Yana Toboso, the mangaka of Black Butler, said she considered writing fluffy spin-off pieces with the characters of her series but gave up on the idea since all of them kept turning out pretty grim after some time. But what if that was also the case with the Black Butler itself?
