Black Butler: Public School Arc (Kuroshitsuji: Kishuku Gakkou-hen) is getting closer with each week, and there’s less than a month until the series premieres on April 13, 2024. However, there are still a few questions that fans want answered, and the episode count is one of them.
There have been no official details about the number of episodes the new season of Black Butler will have. Manga readers thought it was obvious that it would be a one-cour season with 12 episodes, since the Public School Arc is rather short, 19 chapters.
One of the most famous anime leakers, Sugoi LITE, posted some Black Butler news: the Public School Arc season will be broadcasted for two split cours, which means there will be about 24 episodes with a break somewhere in the middle.
It’s difficult to say whether this is true or not, but this is not the first time this user leaks anime-related content ahead of its official release. Fans tend to trust the leaks by Sugoi LITE, since they often come true.
All of that makes them believe that the new season of Black Butler will indeed have two cours. But they don’t understand why.
The arc is too short for two cours
The new Black Butler season is being promoted as the anime adaptation of the Public School Arc, but as we said, the arc is only 19 chapters long. It usually takes 2-3 chapters to make one episode of the show, which means that a one-cour season is the perfect way to adapt this arc.
That’s why fans don’t really see the point of turning it into a 20-something-episode experience. There simply isn’t enough content for that. Which is basically the same thing that’s happening right now with Demon Slayer and the Hashira Training Arc. Which leads to fans having two expectations for the season: fillers or another arc.
If the new season really only adapts the Public School Arc, then viewers should be prepared for some fillers, otherwise the pacing of the series will be too drawn-out. We know everyone hates fillers, but we haven’t seen Ciel and Sebastian for so long that it might not be such a bad idea.
Another thought is that we haven’t been told everything yet, and the new season will feature the next arc of Black Butler as well, the Emerald Witch. There’s hope that CloverWorks is just waiting for the finale of the first cour to announce it.
