  • This is a private school for boys.
  • Fans keep forgetting about that and mistake boys for girls.

Black Butler: Public School Arc (Kuroshitsuji: Kishuku Gakkou-hen) keeps airing, and Episode 2 was released on April 20, 2024, giving us even more of the beloved Ciel and Sebastian.

The most common emotion the members of the fandom are feeling right now is complete happiness due to Black Butler just being back. But there’s also another feeling, which is confusion.

The Public School Arc is set in Weston College, Great Britain's finest public school in the series. Ciel enrolls in the college to solve a case of a missing student, and Sebastian follows him there as a member of the school’s staff.

While even the name of the arc suggests that Weston College is a public school, a number of fans missed the fact that it’s for boys exclusively. We’re sorry if you wanted to see a lot of new female characters, since it won’t happen in this arc.

All Characters Are Boys

This is where a lot of the confusion about character design comes from. Since fans didn’t know about the school being for boys only, they don’t necessarily think that every character is a boy. So it’s natural to assume someone’s gender by looking at them, that’s how the human mind works.

Back when there were just visuals for the series, it was easy to assume that the Purple House prefect, Gregory Violet, might be a girl. He has some feminine face features and wears a ribbon instead of a tie.

And the same thing happens with some other Black Butler Public School characters. Cole is said to be the most handsome student in the school, and if you saw his picture out of context without knowing who he is, there’s a good chance you’d think he was a girl.

But then he opens his mouth and says something, and you hear a male voice. This was so confusing to a lot of fans that they couldn’t even believe it for a second.

Then we have Harcourt, who also looks very feminine, and just the same thing happens all over again: you think it’s a girl when it’s actually a boy. Moreover, even his voice is so soft and gentle that it’s easy to get confused.

So keep in mind that Weston College is a school for boys, so you won’t find any girls among its students, and don’t let the series confuse you anymore.
