Boruto, The Unsatisfying Sequel: Why Are Fans Upset?

Boruto, The Unsatisfying Sequel: Why Are Fans Upset?

Should the story have been different?

Summary:

  • Boruto was very hyped back in the day, but brought a lot of disappointment.
  • It was never as good as Naruto.
  • Naruto should have kept Madara as the final villain.

Naruto is one of the most famous and popular anime series in the world, so when Naruto Shippuden finished airing back in 2017, fans were really sad to say goodbye.

It didn’t even matter that Naruto was also famous for being extremely long, fans were so in love with the anime that they wanted more. And then Boruto happened.

What’s wrong with Boruto?

The answer is pretty simple, actually: it’s not as good as the original series. Back when it was announced, the hype was huge, because of course! It’s Naruto we’re talking about! But a lot of fans got disappointed after the first few episodes and dropped the series.

A number of people say that Boruto happened only due to money reasons. As we’ve said, Naruto is an incredibly popular series, and anything Naruto-related brings immense hype with it. So they decided to prolong the life of the series and released Boruto as a way to earn some more money on it.

While quite a lot of people understood that it was just free money for the production managers, it was obvious that such an international phenomenon would continue, and it did.

Some fans think that it wasn’t THAT bad, actually. Yes, Boruto was never as good as Naruto, but they say there was nothing that made them outraged. It was just okay.

The writing and the story of Boruto are a controversial topic in the fandom. Some think that it was an absolutely boring disaster, and some found it enjoyable. However, even the latter agree that no one who’s old enough to have a driver’s license would see Boruto’s writing as “peak.”

The technology issue is also brought up by fans. They say it was rather ambiguous in Naruto already, but Boruto elevated this issue to another level. It didn’t break the immersion in Naruto, however Boruto’s Konoha reminded viewers of 21st century New York at times.

How should Naruto have ended?

A number of fans think that the existence of Boruto is Naruto Shippuden and its ending’s fault. The series should have never brought another “bad guy” to be the final boss of the series. It should have stuck with Madara, because he was the one who had been built for so much time.

The “aliens” shouldn’t have been introduced into the series (at least not this close to the finale). A lot of fans saw this change of course as quite unsatisfying. On top of that, a lot of fans think that the origin of chakra should have remained a mystery, as that would leave a lot of room for various fan theories.
