Chainsaw Man Parents’ Guide: Not the Best Anime for Young Audiences

Some things in the series can get a bit too much.

Summary:

  • Chainsaw Man is rated R for violence and profanity.
  • There’s a big focus on sexual themes in the series.
  • It’s inappropriate for young audiences.

Chainsaw Man is one of the most prominent anime series out there. Despite the fact that it’s been almost two years since the last time we saw any of its characters animated, the show is still talked about a lot, and keeps attracting new viewers every day.

It features demons, breathtaking battles and a man that has a chainsaw coming out of his head. In other words, every other teenager would want to watch it. But should they?

Rating and Inappropriate Content

Chainsaw Man is officially rated R (not recommended for viewers under the age of 17) for violence and profanity, and this is the perfect rating for the series. The anime features a lot of blood and gore, its world is full of brutality, and you can’t even imagine it without a few severed limbs in each episode.

There are all types of inappropriate for kids content in Chainsaw Man: smoking, drinking, sex scenes. So if you don’t want your child to get inspired by the anime’s characters, perhaps it’s better to choose another series.

Sex plays a major role in Chainsaw Man. Although the anime tries to send the right message about it, it’s still there. There are sexualized women who manipulate men by using sexual attractions.

As we’ve said, Chainsaw Man is a gory anime, Episode 1 includes a major massacre and the series doesn’t tone down the insanity since then.

Positive Messages and Role Models

Despite all the inappropriate content, Chainsaw Man can teach its viewers some positive things.

Sex does permeate a lot of the series’ themes. The main protagonist’s motivation at the beginning of the series is to find a pretty girlfriend, touch her breasts and have sex with her. But it’s not in the show just for the sake of being there, it has a purpose.

Denji, the said protagonist, realizes that sexual things are better when you experience them with someone you truly care about, and that is an important message that young audiences need to learn.

Chainsaw Man is also great when it comes to character development. Denji starts with shallow motivation, but becomes significantly better over time. He reminds us of a little kid sometimes; a person who’s just learning about the world and understands how it works bit by bit.

But to fully understand all of Chainsaw Man’s messages and symbolism, you have to be an adult. There’s a good chance that Denji’s desire to “touch some boobs” won’t be a thought-provoking factor for a kid or a teenager, it will make them giggle and excited to see something sexual, and thus forbidden.

That’s why Chainsaw Man is sadly not for kids. It’s full of intricate themes and inappropriate content, challenging to understand for those who haven't experienced something like that in real life. That’s why we consider the series’ rating very accurate.
