Chainsaw Man’s Makima Wasn’t that Bad, and Here’s Proof

Chainsaw Man’s Makima Wasn’t that Bad, and Here’s Proof

The hate is deserved, but there are good things about her, too.

Chainsaw Man manga spoilers ahead!

Summary:

  • Makima being so hated makes her a great villain.
  • She’s a very logical character, and her actions make a lot of sense.
  • Denji and Makima’s relationship is toxic, but it’s not void of care.

Don’t rush to conclusions after reading the title, we do know all the terrible things Makima did. And we can’t forget the death of Power, either. And her being in various “most hated manga characters” is fairly understandable. But you have to admit that a character that makes you feel this much hatred works excellently as a villain. After all, aren’t we all supposed to detest villains?

Makima is a fascinating antagonist

At first sight, Makima seems to be kind, gentle and friendly. She always has some sort of smile on her face, and her calm voice is very persuasive. But this clever facade only makes her more frightening when she actually shows her true self. It doesn’t matter if you’re a Makima hater or fan, you can’t deny that watching her is highly entertaining.

Everything Makima does, she does out of logic. She forgets about morals along the way (if she even has any) and uses reasoning, and many of her actions actually make a lot of sense. A number of Makima protectors even go as far as to say that everything she’s done, she’s done for humanity.

The main issue fans have with this character is that she’s responsible for a number of deaths. We’ve already mentioned Power, and this is unforgivable. But speaking about Aki, fans mention that he only had a year to live, so her killing him wasn’t such a big deal. Questionable point, but we might understand it.

Makima cared for Denji

Makima and Denji’s relationship is one of the most problematic ones in the series. At first, Denji is completely obsessed with her and he’s ready to do anything she wants him to. And Makima is ready to provide commands. She uses him, abuses him and makes him watch her kill his friends. But there have been kind moments between these two as well.

Makima did care about Denji. Not in a kindhearted and affectionate way, of course, because we doubt that she’s even capable of such feelings. Although their relationship was abusive, and their dynamic is quite complicated, there was also some sort of weird care. She didn’t want him to die a painful death, and she herself mentioned Denji being like family to her. A number of fans even say they have a bizarre mother-son dynamic. Which is a wild thing to say, but nothing in Chainsaw Man is sane and normal, so it fits the series perfectly.
