Social anxiety meets an after school music club in Bocchi the Rock!
No news about the second season.
Possible hope for S2 in two recap movies planned for 2024!
There’s something magical about musical afterschool club shows like K-on! and Hibike! Euphonium, with a cast of likable characters working hard towards a grandiose goal like Budokan or a big orchestral competition. There’s also something very endearing about stories of socially anxious nervous wrecks finding friends and happiness, like in Hitoribocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu and Komi Can’t Communicate (Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu). And if you combine these two types of stories, you get Bocchi the Rock!
Bocchi the anxious girl
No, Hitori “Bocchi” Gotou is not just an introvert — Bocchi is that mix of introversion and debilitating social anxiety that usually gets you bullied at school (so she’s somewhat similar to Tomoko from Watashi ga Motenai no wa Dou Kangaetemo Omaera ga Warui!, only without an unidentified malevolent spirit possessing her 24/7). Though luckily, this story is much more heartwarming than real life.
One day, Bocchi sees an interview with a rock band on TV, and learns that one of the performers was very shy in school, and being in the band really helped him out. So she decides to learn how to play guitar — and spends an unreasonable amount of time getting better at it. Alone. At home. To the point where she became a minor Internet celebrity for her solo guitar skills. All without ever trying to actually find a band.
Luckily, one day she actually takes the plunge, carries her guitar to school, and manages to fumble her way into a rock band looking for a last minute replacement for a lead guitarist. From there, said band practically adopts Bocchi, befriending this silly girl, and slowly but surely dragging her (kicking and screaming) out of her shell.
What about the second season?
The first season of the anime is just 12 simultaneously hilarious and heartwarming episodes that aired in 2022, and if you’ve been wondering when the second season will be announced, we’ve got some news for you: for now, we are getting two recap movies.
The two movies, aptly named Bocchi the Rock! Re: and Bocchi the Rock! Re: Re:, are currently scheduled for release in 2024. Yes, these are recap movies and will likely have little to no new material — but on the other hand, they also represent an opportunity for the fans of the show to vote with their wallets, as these movies’ commercial success will make it much more likely for the second season to be greenlit. So be sure to watch the official release, and tell your friends as well!
