You may think that Death Note and Death Parade have nothing in common except for the fact that both series have the word "death" in their names, but it's not entirely true. Let's start with a short recap of both shows to understand what we're going to talk about.
Death Note follows Light, an extraordinary student, who finds a mysterious note that gives him the power to kill people. He decides to use the note to get rid of dangerous criminals and build a better world.
Death Parade takes place in Quindecim, a strange bar where people are taken to after their deaths to be judged. The judgment process results in them either being reincarnated or being sent to oblivion.
The first connection of these two series is rather simple and on the surface: they were both animated and produced by the Madhouse studio. However, that is not everything they have in common.
Since arbiters' job in Death Parade is closely tied to deceased people, they are aware of the world's death rate situation. Although this fact is not given a lot of attention in Death Parade and just mentioned as a piece of background information, one of its characters mentions that the average number of deaths has grown significantly. You may have not even noticed this detail, but it actually can be very important.
Did Light Just Make a Cameo in the Afterlife?
The idea is that this increase in the death rate might be directly connected to Light killing criminals. Moreover, this increase is also said to be quite sudden, which only proves that it might have been influenced by unnatural events. Such as Light finding his death note, for example.
This theory wouldn't be this believable if we had zero proof, but this is not the case.
In episode 11 of Death Parade we can see an unnamed dead man, sitting in one of the rooms and waiting for his sentence. We know nothing about his fate and identity. But if you look at him closely, you might recognize… Light! His appearance strongly resembles the protagonist of Death Note, and his aloof demeanor and emotionless face only add more proof to the theory.
Besides, one of the deceased visitors of the bar, Mayu, is given the chance to sacrifice this unknown man to save her beloved singer, Harada, who's also died. And both Harada and Light are voiced by the same actor.
Neither heaven nor hell exists in both anime, and it seems natural that after his death Light would've got into one of the mysterious bars. It would be really interesting to see the judgment process including Light, but unfortunately this is where the connection stops, so we can only guess what his verdict might be.
Light, honey, are you lost?
