Death Note’s L Isn’t the Hero You Think He Is

Death Note’s L Isn’t the Hero You Think He Is

He has questionable qualities too.

Summary:

  • While Light is usually considered a villain, L is seen as a hero.
  • These two characters are more similar than you think.
  • L’s methods were also questionable, even if he meant well.

Death Note is mostly famous for its intriguing story, suspense, detective elements, and outstanding characters, of course. There’s no doubt about who the true stars of the show are; they are obviously Light and L.

The entire fandom is mostly divided into two camps: team L and team Light. Fans have been fighting over their morals and ways of achieving justice for ages. While Light is considered a morally gray person or even a completely evil one, L is usually seen as a hero, who’s trying to catch the villain. But in reality, he’s not.

This is not L slander, of course, he’s an incredible character, but he cannot be considered a true hero and the absolute good. L is also morally gray, and this is actually the beauty of Death Note: there aren’t heroes and villains, just people.

Are you team L or team Light?

He Was Ready to Do Anything

L’s methods are effective indeed. He was so close to catching Kira, but Light had the Death Note, Misa and shinigami on his side, which led to L’s defeat. However, the detective managed to get really close to Kira, and it was mostly thanks to his morally gray strategies.

It started rather mildly, when L used the surveillance cameras in Light’s house. But if you really think about it, it was already pretty messed up. Even Souichirou pointed it out and said that there were two women living in his house, so it’s questionable to put cameras all around it. But it never stopped L.

Just like Light, L used criminals as guinea pigs and was interested in Kira’s next move. It didn’t even feel like L truly cared about their lives. He replaced himself with a criminal on TV to trick Kira. And even though the criminal was sentenced to death anyway, it was still a pretty unkind thing to do.

L was also choosing the cases to work on based on his own interests. He didn’t get involved in something that he didn’t find curious, even if it needed urgent attention. He liked being challenged and enjoyed only the big cases with peculiar circumstances.

L is much like Light when it comes to a crime. It’s a game for both of them, they’re just playing for different teams. They both wanted justice, but they could never agree on what this justice really means. L is just as dangerous as Light, but he never had this type of power and such a corrupted soul.
