We all know and love Vinland Saga for its deep philosophy, engaging story and appealing characters. But what some of you might not know is that the story of the manga and anime is based on real-life, existing people.
A lot of familiar names
The prototype for Vinland Saga’s Thorfinn is Thorfinn Karlsefni, a real Icelandic explorer who followed a route to Vinland with the goal of establishing a permanent settlement there. Does this story remind you of anything? That’s right, it sounds like Vinland Saga Season 2.
The name of the manga is also no coincidence, since Thorfinn's expeditions were documented in two sagas, known together as “The Vinland Sagas.”
The real-life Thorfinn also had a wife, and her name is Gudrid, which, yes, you’ve guessed it, is also the name of the future wife of the fictional Thorfinn. In real life she also bore him a son, Snorri, who was the first child of European descent known to have been born in the New World.
The history lesson does not end there, though. Canute is also based on a real person, Cnut, who was King of England, King of Denmark, and King of Norway. He died of natural causes, which, let’s be honest, is not a common thing for kings, and his realm was split between his sons.
How will the fictional story end?
The fate of real-life Thorfinn makes some Vinland Saga fans nervous about the manga finale, since his ending was not a happy one. He was forced to come back North with his wife and his followers, many of whom died during this journey. On top of that, he died pretty young, under the age of 30.
Let’s hope that the fictional Thorfinn will avoid this fate, and his ending will be at least a little bit happier. But we know how cruel and unforgiving the world of Vinland Saga is, so this hope might be in vain.
Although fans don’t know how much the fictional story will follow the real events, they hope that the finale will be very different, otherwise what is the point of having this story told?
The main idea is that the Vinland Saga Thorfinn will also try to establish the “paradise", free of war and injustice, and his immense character development will allow him to succeed.
He failed to get his revenge against Askeladd, and Season 2 explored his path to becoming a better person, and having all his hopes and dreams ruined would send the wrong message.
Fans believe that the only way Thorfinn’s plan might fail is if he decides to abandon his new ideals and go back to his old ways. And we sincerely hope that won’t be the case.
