Do People Like Jujutsu Kaisen Just Because of Its Animation?

Some fans feel like the awards it has won were unjustified.

Summary:

  • After Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2024, fans wonder if Jujutsu Kaisen has anything going for it other than its animation.
  • Like with Demon Slayer, the animation made it more popular — but it already had a huge fanbase.
  • The anime is fun to watch, but it also has important themes and messages.

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 won most of the Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2024. Many fans, however, feel that not all of these awards are deserved. While there’s little doubt that the anime is one of the most well-made recent series from the animation standpoint, some feel like it’s lacking in other aspects.

The anime made the series more popular

There’s an argument that as long as a series has flashy and cool fights, viewers can forgive its weak plot and characters. Most of the time, this is used to refer to Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba), in which the animation is definitely the main selling point — the story is actually fairly simple.

That said, it’s not like without the trademark ufotable style Demon Slayer would suddenly be unpopular. In fact, the manga already had a steady fanbase before it got adapted — that fanbase was just significantly expanded after the release of the anime. Similarly, Jujutsu Kaisen was also popular before the release of the anime.

Strong points of the anime

Jujutsu Kaisen has often been characterized as consisting of fights, fights and nothing else. That said, that’s not necessarily true: the anime does have a solid story that makes fans come up with new theories every day.

It also deals with topics like power (and responsibility that comes with it) and the impact of emotional trauma — which are quite common for battle shounen series, but they are executed very well.

The second season especially got this criticism. There were so many characters, fights and deaths that some viewers felt lost — so much was happening. That said, a lot of confusion comes from watching the anime weekly: binging it would have certainly helped.

Similarly, JJK has quite a few well-written and memorable characters. Satoru Gojo is a fan-favorite for a reason — despite not being a protagonist. And while fans often feel like the mangaka hates Yuji, they can’t deny he’s a well-written main character.

JJK is very fun to watch

A lot of the categories where JJK S2 won in Crunchyroll Awards 2024 were actually perfectly valid. For example, the “best action” category virtually requires the anime to have great visuals.

Similarly, while there can be arguments made that the Shibuya Incident Arc was a bit too chaotic, it still made for a good spectacle, and that’s what mattered in the end: fans were expecting a new episode every week, and the discussions were everywhere on the internet
