Crunchyroll held their Anime Awards on March 2, 2024, and the anime community couldn’t keep quiet from the moment the winners were announced. There were some “I knew it” moments as well as a couple of unexpected surprises. And there’s one show that seemed to have it all.
Anime of the year
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 became the Anime of the Year, but the accolades did not end there. The series also won in categories such as Best Character Design, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Action Anime, Best Supporting Anime Character, Best Voice Actor Performance, Best Anime Opening Sequence and Best Anime Ending Sequence.
There were also four categories in which Jujutsu Kaisen was nominated: Best Continuing Anime Series, Best Animation, Best Art Director, Best Anime Song. But these awards went to other series. Which means that Jujutsu Kaisen won 9 out of 13 categories it was nominated for.
This outcome led to fans jokingly calling the event “Jujutsu Kaisen awards” because of how strongly the series dominated it. But as you may understand, a lot of fans are struggling with approaching the situation with humor.
Do you think Jujutsu Kaisen deserved to win Best Anime?
It was great, but…
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 was definitely incredible. It animated one of the most important arcs in the entire series, it made fans say goodbye to some of the important characters, it took our breath away with astonishing action. However, was it really that great?
The Anime Awards left fans with a lot of questions. It’s natural for some fans to be unsatisfied with the results, but this year’s awards are especially good at causing frustration. And how could it go any other way when only one series almost always wins?
There have been a lot of great and huge anime series lately, but it feels like the awards went to the most popular of them, not to the actual best one. And we say it as hardcore Jujutsu Kaisen fans, don’t get us wrong.
But we have to admit that the series had its issues. The MAPPA controversy alone should have influenced the results, but it feels like it’s just the reason why JJK didn’t get the Best Animation award.
Fans were hoping to see series like Vinland Saga or Hell’s Paradise win at least a couple of categories, but it never happened, and they’re confused and frustrated. They don’t understand how it could have happened.
There was also hope for some more diversity because there are so many series that need attention, too. And when only one anime is praised, while others are ignored, it’s nothing but upsetting.
