How does losing the memory affect Light?
In the Death Note series there comes a point when Light has to sacrifice his memories of ever possessing the death note to prove he's not actually Kira, and some fans noticed a few changes in his views.
Having no idea that he was actually the true Kira, Light joins L and the police to help them catch the murderer. He's on the side of the law now and, as he says himself, "needs to concentrate on capturing Kira as soon as possible". Does this amnesia modify his beliefs, though?
Let's start with a simple fact that being an observer to somebody's actions is never the same as being in control of them. It's much easier to condemn the one who's in possession of the death note than to keep from making the same decisions when you're holding this note in your own hands.
Light didn't just lose his memories, he lost the power that came with them, so there was nothing to spoil him and give him the ability to kill people.
However, some fans point out that Light's morals were never really far from Kira's even at the moment of his amnesia: he is haunted by the similarity of his beliefs to those of the original Kira's. It's important to emphasize that we're talking about the original Kira now, because Light understood that the current one was a copycat. The new Kira was killing all reported criminals without a second thought while the original one had logic when it came to the ones he decided to punish. Light could always relate to that.
It might seem bizarre but some fans add that Light has always had principles and integrity. In the beginning of Death Note he is shaken by him killing two men so much that he had to rewrite his morals and convince himself that he wasn't a bad person, these people deserved to die and he should become the force that will clear the world up from such criminals. That makes the desire of his amnesiac self to catch the new Kira more understandable.
Moreover, when memoryless Light thinks about him being Kira, he comes to the conclusion that it's untrue not because his morals differ from the murderer's but because he feels that killing so many people and having no recollection of it is highly unlikely.
The only real difference in how Light and Kira think, as fans say, is the way he treats Misa. Light without his memories wouldn't use her as a pawn in getting what he wants, because he doesn't have any recollections of his plans and his ideas. By losing his memories he loses the sense of importance of his mission, while the old Light put creation of the new world and becoming its god above anything else.
