Don’t Drop Oblivion Battery Just Yet, It’s Getting Better

The series is underrated.

Summary:

  • Episode 2 has just aired.
  • It made fans more invested in the story.
  • Your opinion of Kei defines your perception of the series a lot.

Oblivion Battery (Boukyaku Battery) is a rather fresh baseball anime by MAPPA that started airing on April 10, 2024. Last week there wasn’t much to say about the series, Episode 1 was just okay, but Episode 2 aired on April 17, and it feels like the anime is getting better bit by bit.

The series follows a baseball duo of pitcher Haruka and catcher Kei. They used to be true stars of their sport, but Kei has lost his memory and has no intention to get back into baseball anymore. Haruka doesn’t want to give up on him; he’s confident that he can get his friend to love sports again.

It’s Improving

Episode 1 was fine, there wasn’t anything outstanding about it, but it was still enjoyable to watch. MAPPA’s production issues were showing and Kei’s weird sense of humor was something you had to get used to, but a certain charm was definitely there.

Episode 2 was a sort of improvement compared to the first one. Viewers are trying to make peace with Kei’s personality, there’s hilarious chemistry between the main characters, and the series is learning how to be exciting.

You Have to Like Kei to Like the Series

Kei can definitely be… a lot. Hardly a minute goes by without him being eccentric and absolutely weird, throwing inappropriate jokes at anyone who would listen. He rarely shuts up and calms down, always shouting and annoying the hell out of other characters.

That’s why it’s so challenging for some viewers to really get into Oblivion Battery. There’s a lot of Kei, and Episode 2 really leaned into his ridiculousness.

Don’t worry, though, manga readers have good news: Kei will get better over time. The story makes you dislike him intentionally, so that his character development will hit harder later on.

But if you’re one of those who actually enjoy Kei’s quirky personality and dumb jokes, then you don’t even need to wait for the series to get great, it’s already wonderful. Mamoru Miyano, Kei’s seiyuu, definitely had a lot of fun voicing him, and it shows.

Oblivion Battery has a pretty low score as of now (6.81/10 on MyAnimeList), but fans expect it to change when more episodes are out. This week’s episode already made viewers more interested and invested in the story, and we expect the anime to only get better in the future.
