Anime characters don’t always need words to be likable or even relatable. Moreover, the inability to express themselves via words forces them to do it with their actions, and thus they become the best examples of “show, don’t tell.”
Bojji ― Ranking of Kings (Ousama Ranking)
Bojji can neither hear nor speak, and other characters tend to see him as dumb and irrelevant. However, he is nothing like that, and what’s important is that he doesn’t allow the opinions of others to get to him.
The inability to communicate the way most people do made Bojji super aware of others and their feelings. Bojji’s empathetic nature and big heart make him a wonderful character, who’s also very intelligent and resilient even despite all the hardships.
At the beginning of the story, Hyakkimaru is stripped of all his senses: he can’t speak, can’t hear, can’t see. Even his nervous system is missing, so he can’t feel pain.
And yet he lives and fights the demons that took all of his body parts from him. He regains the ability to speak and hear with time, and charming Dororo is there to help Hyakkimaru communicate with others until that moment arrives.
Akira is everything a lot of people want to be: rich, popular, exceptionally smart and skilled, and, most importantly, an amazing gamer.
Although it doesn’t look like she’s mute, she doesn’t talk and uses gestures and facial expressions to communicate her thoughts and feelings. Akira sometimes also makes small noises like “umm”.
What’s interesting is that Akira’s voice actor sings one of the endings for the series, and the sequence shows her character singing along. Which gives us a hint that Akira can indeed talk, but chooses not to.
Nanako ― Senryu Girl (Senryuu Shoujo)
Nanako’s way of communication is one of the most interesting: she doesn’t speak, but she writes poems to relay her thoughts. But it’s never on her way of being the kindest and most charming girl.
And it doesn’t stop Senryu Girl from being a very enjoyable and light-hearted romantic comedy that so many fans consider highly underrated. Nanako does speak later in the story, though, and learns how to verbally express her feelings.
Yuki is hearing-impaired, and she feels unsure and uncomfortable about verbal communication because she was once told her voice sounded weird.
The viewers do hear her voice, though, and there’s hope that the anime’s characters will also be able to do so. After all, Itsuomi has already made Yuki laugh, so we have a feeling there’s a chance of hearing her say something to him later.
The power of silence.
