Dororo: An Underrated Masterpiece

If you haven’t watched Dororo, now is the time to do it!

Dororo was released in 2019 and quickly received praise and high ratings, many people were really into it and the anime made it into the top 5 most famous spring season anime of 2019. So why are there still so many people who have never heard of it and why have we stopped talking about the series?

One of the main reasons for that is very simple: Dororo got overhyped by Demon Slayer that was also released in the spring of 2019. Some fans also pointed out that Dororo becomes repetitive after some time so it’s no surprise that some bigger shows that came out that year simply overshadowed it. Nevertheless, it doesn’t mean that Dororo is worse than other shows or that you shouldn’t watch it. Let’s find out why!

When we talk about Dororo, the first words that come to mind are trauma and suffering. So be prepared because this series doesn’t offer much joy to its viewers: depression permeates almost every episode of the anime. So if you’re not a fan of such dark and cruel shows, it might not be your cup of tea. However, if you find sorrow and watching characters suffer appealing, Dororo is definitely a choice for you.

Misery is not the only thing that makes Dororo entertaining. This is a story of a young man, Hyakkimaru, whose father made a deal with demons to save his land. In return for the demons’ help, the father sacrificed his son, so Hyakkimaru was born without limbs, some organs and even skin. A kind man finds Hyakkimaru and helps him to survive: he makes prosthetic body parts for him. Years later, Hyakkimaru starts his revenge journey in order to defeat the demons and get back what was taken from him. He meets a charismatic thief, Dororo, along the way and they continue together. Watching these two bond and become closer and closer can touch even the hardest of hearts.

The technical aspect of the series is also impressive. The anime is filled with brilliant action scenes, you can’t take your eyes off the screen during Hyakkimaru’s battles with demons. The old school art style makes the show even more refreshing to watch. And the banger opening sets the mood from the very beginning of the story.

This anime will bring you a sense of loneliness and mystery, and surprise you with intense drama and engaging action. It might even make you weep if you tend to get emotional. So if you’ve been looking for something moving yet brutal, Dororo is the anime for you.
