Endeavor Was One of the Best Mentors for Deku, and It's Not Talked About Enough

Endeavor Was One of the Best Mentors for Deku, and It's Not Talked About Enough

Surely better than All Might and Gran Torino.

Summary:

  • Endeavor is a great mentor for Deku.
  • He encourages his method of learning how his quirk works because Endeavor himself paid a lot of attention to managing his own abilities in order to climb the ranks.
  • Endeavor's approach fits Deku's overthinking nature and lets him learn more about himself and apply this knowledge, not just rely on faith and willpower.
  • Maybe Endeavor would've been a better teacher at UA than All Might.

My Hero Academia (Boku No Hero Academia) throughout its run allowed Deku, the protagonist of the series, to train under various mentors. While he started with All Might and inherited his power, he was not the one who was able to bring out the most of Deku and understand exactly what he needed. No: this person was Endeavor, one of the most hated characters of the franchise.

Don't get us wrong, he's hated for a reason: he's done terrible things to his family, inexcusably terrible, in his pursuit of the title of No. 1 Hero, but this mindset is exactly what makes him the most suitable mentor for Deku.

It's all in the approach

Endeavor paid a lot of attention to how his own abilities worked in order to get the maximum output, and that precision management is what allowed him to climb the ranks. He's been overanalyzing his body's reactions, trying to understand his quirk, and this approach is the one that perfectly suits Deku, who's known for being a chronic overthinker. Even before Deku got his power, he's been known to study the quirks of others to understand how they could maximize their abilities and what they should do to mask their flaws. Endeavor used the same technique, just applied it to himself.

The arc with Deku training under Endeavor showed how their synergy works: there's a moment when Deku's muttering things that he has discovered about his own quirk, and while usually this muttering has been brushed off as an annoying gag (even All Might continuously told him to shut up), Endeavor paid attention to these walls of texts and offered an input. Deku wants to be able to micromanage his power during the battle, and Endeavor has built his career on that.

The nature is similar

Both Deku and Endeavor have quirks that without proper caution can destroy their own bodies, so this approach is something they both need. Endeavor is surprisingly attentive as a mentor — maybe it's his way to atone for what he's done as a father, or maybe he's just a good mentor, but with Deku, he constantly tells him to be patient and not to rush things during his quirk development and exploration. He encourages Deku to think and analyze and apply his findings gradually instead of using All Might's favorite motto: "I think you can do it, so just do it!"

In one of the earlier concepts of MHA Endeavor was one of the teachers in UA, so probably this internship arc is something that's been carried over from this version of the story. And maybe he'd actually be a more suitable person to teach at UA than All Might himself.
