The Legend of Zelda game series has received outstanding levels of acclaim from critics and the public. It’s collected 10/10s from various reviewers, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild won “Game of the Year” in the Game Awards 2017.

All this insane success and popularity along with the game’s cartoonish art style has led fans to the big question: anime when? The Legend of Zelda is an incredibly popular series, Nintendo is based in Japan, we’ve already got a manga series based on the games, which once again proved that success follows the series in all forms. But why isn’t there an anime?

It doesn’t matter which strategy is chosen: the anime could be based on the game story, it could expand on it and add more details, it could tell an entirely new story in the same universe — fans don’t care. They just really, really want to see the Legend of Zelda in an anime format. It just feels right.

A fan is working on an animated short film

A YouTube user RwanLink and the Legend of Zelda fan seem to share the belief that the series needs an anime adaptation. And they are ready to provide it if no one else is. This “started as a fun side project in August testing a new art direction,” as the fan says, and turned into a proper trailer for an animated short film. The title is “Castle Town” and RwanLink is going to release the video on their channel on November 21, 2023.

Devoted fans could not be more excited. They are amazed by the artistry and passion put into the project, and can’t wait to see the final result. The trailer itself looks gorgeous with an interesting art style that fans claim to have the real “Zelda vibe”.

There’s still hope to ever see an official anime adaptation of the series, though. Nintendo is very protective of their brand and projects, and that’s understandable. As fans say, they don’t have an internal animation studio and don’t want anyone else messing with their creation, but things can easily change. And for now, we have a fan-made anime to keep us company.
