Why do female characters always suffer?
Summary:
- The beginning of Sumire’s story was good.
- She hasn’t been really relevant ever since.
- Sumire doesn’t need romance, she needs character development.
Female characters used to be a big issue in Naruto, and you’d think Boruto should have learned from the mistakes of the original series, but it feels like all the hopes were in vain, and girls are still treated like irrelevant characters. And Sumire is one of those girls.
The character’s origin
Sumire had a great setup in Part 1. Fans really enjoyed her story and sympathized with her after learning about the death of her mother. Her family story was tragic and gave her a lot of space for character development.
Sumire’s father trained the girl to be stronger and exact revenge, so she had a lot of potential to be a great fighter.
However, after her setup was over, there wasn’t much going on for her. Sumire hasn’t been important to the plot for a long time, and all the hints at the romance between her and Boruto look like she’s turning into Hinata 2.0. Even Sumire’s personality reminds viewers of her sometimes.
We need more story, less romance
All of the above makes fans really upset about Sumire and where her character development is going. They want her to be really relevant to the story, they want to see her fight and do something meaningful.
There are plenty of events in Boruto that might help the series unfold Sumire’s personality more. Fans want some mental realizations from her, they want to see her true personality and desire character development.
It’s still early to say whether the anime is trying to lead to Boruto and Sumire ending up together, and a number of fans admit that they don’t see this couple as the endgame of the series. But even if they do, this twist should be deserved.
That’s why they think the best way to handle this romance is to make Sumire help Boruto in some way using her ninja tech skills. This will make Sumire important for the plot and will give Boruto and her a chance to bond.
Fans are worried that Sumire will never be anything more than just a romantic interest, and it’s upsetting. She’s turning into another girl who has great potential but is destined to stay in the shadow of male characters.
On top of that, Sumire doesn’t even need any romance to be going on in the first place. There’s plenty of her to work with story-wise, so she doesn’t need a romantic storyline, she needs to be relevant to the story.
