Fans Don't Seem Happy With Some of the Music Choices in Jujutsu Kaisen

The latest episode especially had a very bizarre moment.

Summary:

  • Fans are confused by a certain music choice in the latest JJK episode.
  • Others argue that choice has been deliberate.
  • It may even be related to the production issues with the show.

Jujutsu Kaisen fans have recently found their show to be the center of drama involving inhumane working conditions for animators. With MAPPA yet to respond to this controversy, people have started picking out more and more specific problems with the show. Recently, there seems to be an opinion that some of the music choices in the show don’t match the scenes they play in.

Episode 17 played the opening during a scene where it doesn’t fit

There have already been some fans that were not so fond of the music in JJK, but they seemed to be a minority. However, with the release of Episode 17 of the second season, more people have voiced this opinion. In particular, they do not seem to approve that during Yuji’s breakdown, a very grim yet cathartic moment of the series, the opening, “SPECIALZ” by King Gnu, started playing. The tone of the song completely mismatches the tone of the scene, making the music choice seem odd and forced.

Intentional thematic choice?

“Opening playing during a key moment of the show” has been an anime trope for decades. The scene in which it played in Episode 17 is a key moment, for sure, however, the trope is usually associated with hype moments, not with the main character’s existential crisis. However, some fans are arguing that here this trope is invoked deliberately, with lyrics of the song fitting the way Sukuna would taunt Yuji. Others consider this point of view a huge stretch. Yes, the lyrics do somewhat fit in Sukuna’s character, but the song is still upbeat, which is something that absolutely can not be said about the scene it plays in.

A third opinion

There has been expressed an opinion that this choice is not deliberate, but related to the working conditions in MAPPA as well. Indeed, theoretically, with incredibly strict deadlines, the team may have had no time to quality-check the entire episode, with the director simply being too busy to find a better music choice. This theory sounds way too outlandish, but without a direct statement from a team member, we will never know for sure. It’s unfortunate that for some fans, one of the best moments of their series was not adapted perfectly, but the show still not falling apart even with animators overworked is nothing short of a miracle, for which people working on it have to be praised.
