Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Makes a Revolution in Shonen: No Battles Until the End of the Season?

Shonen without battles?

Summary:

  • The anime recently reached the top of the anime list on MyAnimeList, beating Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.
  • The atmosphere of episodes from the life of the main character was more of an anime in slice-of-life genre.
  • With 11th episode, the anime has returned to its usual pace.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End continues to win more and more awards. It recently reached the top of the anime list on MyAnimeList, beating out Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. We can talk a lot about the anime's attractions, but perhaps the most memorable element is the melancholy atmosphere of the series. Although we shouldn't forget that Frieren primarily belongs to the shonen genre, which is characterized by a rapid turnover of events and an abundance of battles. Fans don't seem to be disappointed by the lack of spectacular fights in Episode 10, but what's next? Will we see more epic battles in this anime?

What we already have

Many people have probably heard this story more than once. An elf named Frieren returns to her normal life after coming back from a heroic journey, but after a while she finds out that her friends have become old and are dying. Time goes slower for her, so Frieren doesn't change at all, that cannot be said about the people around her. Together with her new companions, Frieren decides to repeat her former adventure in order to recognize her old friends better.

The first episodes of the anime set the mood for the whole series. The melancholic and sometimes touching atmosphere of the episodes from the main character's life was similar to anime in the slice-of-life genre. Frieren traveled to different cities and completed chores that had accumulated over the adventure. The slow-paced episodes were charming with their small but extremely important elements. And it seemed that the anime would continue to delight with the everyday concerns of the protagonist, but from Episode 7, events took a serious turn. An epic battle was just about to begin, but the fight shown in Episode 10 didn't have a stunning effect. On the contrary, it was presented in the spirit of the whole series, in which battles don't seem to matter much.

Our expectations

It seems that the idea of showing the underside of heroic adventures is justified. Perhaps this revisionist approach contributed to the popularity of the anime. However, it's hard to imagine that such a decision can hold viewers' attention for a long time. It's also surprising that an anime in the shonen genre is so quiet. No wonder some fans are asking for more events and action in the anime.

Now the battle with a group of powerful demons led by Aura the Guillotine is over. With the new 11th episode, the anime has returned to its usual pace. We were shown scenes from the main characters' everyday life in the north. There are 28 episodes announced in the anime and we can definitely say that we won't see a dynamic plot anytime soon. Looking at the manga, we can expect that the viewers will see at least one more quietly paced plot related to the exam for the title of First Class Mage. Most likely, the active action will start towards the end of the season, but now we have a chance to enjoy what we love so much in Frieren.
