Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Starts Rather Slowly, but Maybe It’s Intentional?

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Starts Rather Slowly, but Maybe It’s Intentional?

What’s wrong with one of the best anime of this season?

Summary:

  • Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is the highest rated anime ever.
  • It starts rather slowly, and a number of people drop it after a couple of episodes.
  • The first episodes are just the prologue, and you have to give Frieren more time.

The immense hype that Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Sousou no Frieren) is getting right now is impossible to ignore. The series has been getting so much praise, that its ratings are skyrocketing, and it’s recently surpassed Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, becoming the highest-rated MyAnimeList series ever.

Frieren starts at a slow pace

As it goes with all popular series that become unavoidable, there comes a moment where someone says “I don’t understand the hype”. And this moment came pretty quickly with Frieren mostly due to a rather slow beginning of the anime. So what’s wrong with it?

The first couple of episodes are rather underwhelming. There aren't any real conflicts, the story feels boring, the plot is hardly there, magic and action are forgotten most of the time, and the only thing that makes you keep watching is the atmosphere and the stunning art style. It feels like a slice-of-life series, but where is the promised adventure?

Don’t worry, it’s coming!

Frieren is an elven mage, who’s been living for hundreds of years. She spent 10 years on a quest to defeat the Demon King with her party members. For her, 10 years is nothing, just a mere moment of her life. However, her companions are not like that. Years go by, and Frieren sees them die of old age. That’s when she decides to reevaluate human bonds and her perception of them. She vows to create real personal connections and understand people better.

The first four episodes of the series are just the prologue. Yes, they might feel tedious at times, but they are a good metaphor for an elven mage’s life. Long and sometimes uneventful. These episodes give more detail and explanation on who Frieren is and what drove her to her decision to try to be closer to humans. We know you want action and epic battles, but if you want to truly experience the beauty that Frieren is, you have to brace yourself and wait for some time.

Frieren will not remain a series full of endless conversations forever. It’s going to have all the typical shounen things like action sequences, blood and battles, magic and drama. It’s just a type of series that needs more time for you to truly understand what it is. And if you’re willing to give Frieren this time, there’s a high chance that you won’t be disappointed.
