Isekai anime are incredibly widespread now. Despite that, we don't often get reverse isekai — characters from other worlds being transported into others. It's a little sad: that kind of premise can be very fun. That said, here are 5 such series.
Perhaps the best example of the genre, Re:Creators follows a group of characters from in-universe works of fiction being pulled into the real world. Naturally, some of them are unhappy about the worlds their authors have written, and they try to change them — all while being a part of a larger plot.
Re:Creators is a beautiful mix of genres. In addition to being a fun action series and an interesting drama with a complex setup, it also has a mystery element, as well as some social commentary.
Dead Mount Death Play
The most accurate way to describe Dead Mount Death Play is: it's a Ryohgo Narita series. He is the author behind Durarara!! and Baccano!, and so, the anime has a ton of plot points and characters that only start making sense later. As such, many fans felt like it was underwhelming at first, but if you follow it through, it pays off. The main character is Corpse God, the necromancer reincarnated into modern-day Japan, who tries to figure out the reason why and how he got there in the first place.
Uncle from Another World
Uncle from Another World (Isekai Ojisan) is quite literally a reverse isekai — as in, it reverses the previous premise of isekai. The protagonist's uncle wakes up from a many-year coma, during which he apparently had adventures in another world. The anime combines the isekai humor with throwbacks to the 90s, which will make older anime fans feel very nostalgic.
Ya Boy Kongming!
It can be argued that reincarnating into the same world doesn't really count as isekai, however, the sheer difference between settings makes Ya Boy Kongming! (Paripi Koumei) count. Zhuge Liang, the legendary Chinese strategist who lived almost 2000 years ago, finds himself in the middle of the night in 21st century Japan. He proceeds to use his strategic genius to help an upcoming artist's career — and yes, this is as entertaining as you might think.
The Devil is a Part-Timer!
It might be somewhat hard to recommend The Devil is a Part-Timer! (Hataraku Maou-sama!) with how poorly received its sequel seasons are. Don't let that stop you, however: the first season is very much worth watching. The demon lord and his henchman being stranded in Japan and forced to work normal jobs is a very funny premise, and the first season is great. After it, you can try the sequels to see if you vibe with them.
We wish we had more of them.
