Here’s Why Death Note and Attack on Titan Aren’t the Best Anime for Newbies

It might ruin other series for them.

Summary:

  • Death Note and Attack on Titan are often recommended to anime newbies.
  • These series are truly outstanding.
  • That’s why they might set the bar a bit too high and ruin other shows for a newbie.

Recommending an anime for a newbie is a very challenging thing. If the person has no idea what to expect from this type of media, they’d better start with something more chill, but still interesting enough to get them involved.

That’s why when it comes to the first anime to watch, a lot of otaku mention such series as Death Note or Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin).

These two are absolute anime classics with sky-rocketing scores, conflicts that are easy to get behind and an immense fanbase. If so many people love the series, how could a newbie not?

These Series Are Truly Exceptional

We have to admit, this logic is really good. Death Note has very little anime-typical weirdness, it resembles live-action detective stories a lot. The genre of the series is not specific, and basically anybody can get into it.

Attack on Titan is a bit more complicated. It’s packed with gore and action, trauma follows its characters every step of the way, and some things you see there might be off-putting for a certain type of audience.

However, Attack on Titan’s story and character development make up for that. The series is full of intricate mysteries that can make you so engaged that you won’t even remember that you’re watching an animated series.

Moreover, both Death Note and Attack on Titan have great art styles that will make it easier for a newbie to get used to watching an animated medium. Just a couple of episodes in, and you don’t even care that it’s an anime.

But why is it such a bad idea to recommend these shows to a newbie then?

They Will Impact You Perception of Anime

The thing is, Death Note and Attack on Titan have become iconic anime for a reason. Of course, there are a lot of people that haven’t been charmed by these series, but the majority absolutely loved them.

Both these anime set the bar pretty high. There aren’t many series like them, both of them are once-in-a-lifetime experiences. That’s why watching them first might ruin other series for newbies. They’ll always be looking for something with this much suspense and shocking plot twists.

We aren’t trying to say that Death Note and Attack on Titan are the pinnacle of anime, but these are pretty solid series that will make your expectations so high that it’ll become easier to get disappointed in the future.

That’s why it’s a good idea to start with something great but more “popcorn” like Demon Slayer, for example. This anime will also make you fall in love, but won’t impact the way you perceive anime this much.

It might ruin other series for them.
