Hot Take: Frieren Characters Are the Weakest Part of the Anime

It’s sometimes difficult to relate to them.

Summary:

  • A lot of fans find Frieren characters rather boring.
  • They want more diversity when it comes to their personalities.
  • Fans also want Frieren’s party to interact with other characters more.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Sousou no Frieren) is an outstanding anime, we have to make it clear. It’s one of the best fantasy anime that we’ve seen recently, and the worldbuilding, the vibe, and the animation are on another level.

However, so many men, so many minds, so there are naturally things that don’t work for a number of fans. And when it comes to Frieren, one of these things is the series’ characters.

Not enough different personalities

Frieren herself is quite an emotionless character, and we understand that it feels natural for the story, since she’s an over-1000-year-old elven mage who’s seen all types of things in her life. Surprising her and making her feel something is a challenging task. But it still doesn’t change the fact that Frieren might be a little bit boring at times.

The same goes for Fern. The story is trying to turn her into a younger copy of Frieren, aloof and reserved. Seeing Fern smile is an event worth celebration due to how seldom it happens. That’s why fans feel like these two characters out of the main trio are very similar, so none of them is bringing anything new to the table.

Stark, however, is different, and that’s why the series got much better character-wise when he was introduced. But fans are still upset that there isn’t more diversity. And when there’s little of it, it’s more challenging to find a character to relate to.

The worst thing about Stark is that he may come off as annoying for some fans, so if they don’t enjoy stern emotionless characters and are irritated by Stark, then the main trio will never work for them.

Fans want more interactions

Apart from that, fans are craving more interactions with the characters outside of the main party. We know that such relationships can never be as important as the dynamics within Frieren’s party, but it’s still curious to see them interact with other people.

On top of that, the interactions within the party tend to hit the same beats most of the time, so they may feel repetitive after a certain point, and fans want Frieren and others to always be challenged. They want to see other sides of them.

It’s important to point out that Frieren is still a very enjoyable series, even if you failed to fall in love with or relate to its characters. But with just a little bit of diversity, the anime might become close to perfection.
