Many fans are confused about the origin of Yuta’s new cursed spirit power.
In Jujutsu Kaisen 0, the first full-length movie in the franchise based on the homonymous manga volume, we get a change in protagonists. Instead of seeing all the familiar faces from Season 1, we meet Yuta Okkotsu, a new student at Tokyo Jujutsu High who gained tremendous powers thanks to a cursed spirit named Rika. However, after Rika dies, his abilities seem to remain the same. So, how can Yuta still use Rika’s power?
First, let’s set up the premise: in Jujutsu Kaisen 0, we learn that Yuta is haunted by the angry spirit of his best friend Rika Orimoto, who died in a car accident as a child. Rika is extremely protective of Yuta and will use any violent means to defend him from getting hurt. Yuta explores the potential of Rika’s power and learns how to make use of it, until eventually Rika’s curse is dispelled and she leaves our world.
The key thing to remember here is revealed to us in the movie/manga volume: it turns out that Yuta comes from an ancient line of jujutsu sorcerers that goes all the way back to Michizane Sugawara, an extremely powerful shaman turned vengeful spirit. Despite being only his distant relative, Yuta was born with boundless cursed energy and essentially “created” Rika on his own.
As a child, witnessing Rika get hit by a car was so traumatic to Yuta that he accidentally cursed his friend’s soul, turning it into a spirit. Later on, after Rika's soul left our mortal realm, the curse known as “Rika” remained on Earth, as it was created by Yuta himself. Basically, the current Rika is a manifestation of his power.
Now an adult, Yuta needs Rika as a vessel to be able to better manipulate and control his own cursed energy. So, even though the curse no longer exists, Yuta can still manifest Rika. It’s a bit confusing, which is why part of the fandom is still convinced that Yuta’s powers exist thanks to his friend Rika, and not vice versa. In reality, the current iteration of “Rika” is Yuta’s innate cursed energy he was left with after the real Rika passed away.
The new Rika is a completely different entity that can be conjured up and used by Yuta to his own advantage whenever he wants, making him one of the most dangerous sorcerers in the series as of now.
