Episode 4 of Solo Leveling (Ore dake Level Up na Ken) is finally out, and this one brought us the most excitement so far. This is exactly what we’ve been waiting for since reading the title of the anime, as Sung had to be leveling up eventually.
The episode was the epitome of edge-of-your-seat with all those epic fights and creepy monsters. Add to that stunning visuals, great action and exciting soundtrack and you will get the beauty that Solo Leveling is becoming.
A lot of level ups
During the battle sequences, Jinwoo received dozens of “level up” notifications, and fans are naturally curious as to whether his rank has become any better, and if so, then how much better.
There seems to be no doubt: Jinwoo left his E-rank far behind. He’s definitely not the weakest hunter anymore.
The series introduces a color system for monsters, with the white bar meaning that the monster has a lower rank than a hunter encountering it; orange ― it’s equal to the hunter; red ― the monster is much stronger. As the previously-red Lycans Sung was fighting are not red anymore, we can come to only one conclusion: he did level up.
The episode ends with Jinwoo throwing a broken sword and defeating the golem-looking monster by himself, which caused other characters to think that only an S-rank hunter could do that. But is it really true? And could Sung level up this much in just one episode?
We can see from the episode that levels are not the same as ranks. Jinwoo received 10-something “level up” notifications during the battle sequences, but there aren’t that many ranks. So fans are curious about the main protagonist’s current rank.
D or C?
Fans seem to have two main predictions: Jinwoo is now a D-rank or a C-rank. D-rank would sound more probable because things have to progress gradually, and since Jinwoo was previously an E-rank, it would make a lot of sense for him to move one step forward.
However, we can’t forget the finale of the episode, where all he used was a broken sword to defeat a really strong opponent. Fans think it’s impossible for a D-rank hunter to one shot a D-rank boss with a weapon like that. He could have beaten it, of course, but like that? Doesn’t feel believable.
That’s why the most likely conclusion is that Jinwoo skipped rank D and moved straight to C-rank instead. And we can’t wait to see what he’ll be capable of doing whether (or, let’s be honest, when) he becomes an S-rank.
