This might be one of the best anime of the season.
Summary:
Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night was one of the most anticipated anime of the season.
It’s a very well-directed mix of CGDCT and drama.
Many famous staff members are involved.
One of the most exciting new projects of the Spring 2024 anime season has been Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night (Yoru no Kurage wa Oyogenai). The trailers showed some very impressive animation, and the whole anime had a very interesting vibe.
It felt like something that was going to focus on the idea of “follow your dreams” — and the first episode very much impressed the fans.
The Direction Is Amazing
First of all, the direction in the series is amazing. Studio Doga Kobo is mostly known for “cute girls doing cute things” series, and this is technically part of the genre — but it’s much more than your usual anime of that genre.
Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night focuses on a group of girls, all from different backgrounds, forming a street band. If you think about it, the premise sounds somewhat similar to Bocchi the Rock! — but the topics it will deal with are very much different.
Just like Bocchi the Rock!, the anime has an incredibly solid production. CGDCT anime are usually not known for amazing animation, but there’s actually a lot of room for character animation and camera work. This is what fans noticed about Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night — the visuals are incredible.
It’s Not Just CGDCT
The first episode impressed fans, and this is not just because of the visuals. Despite the CGDCT vibes, the anime shows some beginnings of heavier drama.
Fans expect it to become similar to A Place Further Than The Universe (Sora yori mo Tooi Basho), which started as a simple anime about girls and became a cult classic as it went.
Famous Staff Members
The anime is directed by Ryouhei Takeshita, who previously directed Eromanga Sensei. That work was very controversial, although that was mostly due to the nature of the source material. Fans are joking about him finally working on a good series, and they’re happy with his direction so far.
It’s also written by Yuuki Yaku, the original writer of Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki (Jaku-Chara Tomozaki-kun). That said, Jellyfish is very different in pretty much everything, and there are no similarities between the two anime.
Still, the amount of great staff involved in the series has gotten fans excited — not often do we get original anime with so many famous people working on it. So far, the hype is paying off — the first episode was truly amazing.
