Who’s Falin to Marcille?
Although we’ve only seen seconds of Falin, she’s talked about a lot because she’s exactly the reason all the characters are on a mission: they have to save her from a dragon.
German viewers noticed a peculiar thing in the German dubs. When Marcille is speaking about Falin, she uses the phrase “meine Freundin” which just means “my female friend.”
While it originally didn’t have any extra meaning because the German suffix -in is just used to emphasize the gender of a person, some people looked at the wording differently.
“Freund” means “friend”, so adding “in” just states that it’s a friend who’s female. But German viewers say that this word is rarely used in a neutral context because it’s easy to misunderstand it for a romantic partner. It’s a bit the same with the word “girlfriend” in the English language, which can mean just a friend or a girl you’re romantically involved with.
The Japanese language also adds to the confusion and uses the word “daisuki” when Marcille is talking about Falin. “Daisuki” can mean “love” or “like” depending on the context. This word can refer to family bonds, or an intimate friendship as well as something more.
They’re not canon
Manga readers say that it’s just an issue of understanding and translation, since there hasn’t been any canonical romantic involvement between Marcille and Falin. They’re very close, that’s for sure, and the Japanese wording was your biggest hint at that. But anything on top of that can be found solely in fanfiction.
Still, manga readers admit that Marcille and Falin are indeed very important to each other, and their relationship resembles that of sisters. So if you’ve already decided to ship them, you’ll have plenty of content to work with.
