With the sequel coming out recently, many are thinking of picking up the original.
Summary:
Inuyasha is regarded as a classic, and people are wondering whether it holds up to today’s standards.
It is worth watching, however, some people criticize Inuyasha for “problematic content”, which may be a reason not to watch the show.
In the end, it’s a great series, and most of its issues are prevalent in shounen anime in general.
Once, Inuyasha was considered one of the most important shows out there. Being a recommendation for all the new anime watchers back in the 00s, its popularity slowly faded away, with newer shows taking its spot in the limelight. Recently, however, with the release of Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon (Hanyou no Yashahime: Sengoku Otogizoushi), which adapts a sequel manga to Inuyasha, the original show attracted anime watchers once again. With that, however, arose the question: does it still hold up to its classic status back from the 00s?
Still a great show
Inuyasha is still a fairly entertaining fantasy show, with beautifully drawn action that still holds up to this year. With a couple of consistently strong arcs, and barely any filler episodes, it might actually be easier to watch than some of the modern shows. That said, however, it occasionally gets criticized for having a generally slow pacing, as well as getting repetitive at some point. Both of these criticisms are valid, however, they are not as bad as people usually say they are. And if you are still hesitating because of them, perhaps you should rather read manga instead, as that usually helps with pacing issues, because you can read manga as fast or as slow as you are comfortable with.
Problematic content
However, others have noted that Inuyasha has some amount of controversial content. The age gap in the relationship between the main characters (Inuyasha himself is around 200 and Kagome is 15, but the former is a half-demon, not a human), notably, might be off-putting to some people. If that concerns you, that’s fair, and you probably shouldn’t watch the show. However, it is important to remember that fiction is indeed fiction, and things you would consider problematic might not directly translate from a fantasy anime into the real world.
So is it worth it?
Inuyasha still aged solidly to this day. While suffering from the same issues as most other shounen anime (repetitiveness, slow pacing, etc.), it is still a very solid work, and the classic status is totally warranted. While it is not necessary to watch before starting Yashahime, it is absolutely worth it for the action and amazing music alone. The world and characters are very well-written, as well: there is a reason Rumiko Takahashi is one of the most popular and acclaimed mangakas of all time.
